Finally watched this..
Couldn’t watch for awhile because the whole Oscar slap thing just tainted the appeal. However as a fan of tennis and the Williams sisters, I wanted to finally get around to seeing it one day.
I liked the film. I thought Smith deserved the Oscar. Richard Williams is a unique and flawed character, and Smith’s performance of him was nuanced and honest. I thought the film was a typical vehicle for the best actor category, but not best picture. It was all about Richard and not much about Venus and Serena.
I hope Smith’s career recovers and he gets roles. Hope the Oscar incident and aftermath helps him evolve into a more humble and restrained celebrity.
