Not very good

Just finished watching Holidate (2020) on Netflix. Directed by John Whitesell, the film stars Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey as two strangers who decide to be each other's plus one for holidays, but start to fall for each other. The film is very predictable and generic, a paint by numbers typical romantic comedy. It's mildly funny at times, but lacks charm and is often more annoying than entertaining. Roberts is the highlight of the film and does a decent job with the material. Bracey is alright, but the rest of the cast aren't very good here. The screenplay is mediocre, at best. There are a lot of other better romantic comedies out there. I would say skip this one. My rating is a 5/10.

Is it on the same level of Hallmark movies? I'm a sucker for those.

I enjoy most Hallmark movies, but I don't think this was on the same level. It has a very different tone and feel than most Hallmark movies and does not have the same charm or warmth.

Okay, that's gonna be a pass for me.

Check K-Dramas. You have quite a nice number of them and many of them are wonderful romcoms.

It is thankfully way more risque than Hallmark movies.

I mean, Hallmark, the channel that censors out words like "crap", "putz", let alone "ass" or "whore", isn't exactly a standard I'd hold anything to.

I saw Emma Roberts, so I watched. Agree, not very good. Perhaps a 3/10.

I was Gunna watch cause I'm a sucker for a good romcom, but now I might give it a miss.

reply

It was okay. I'm not sure why Luke Bracey keeps doing lame romcoms. He's pretty talented.

I'd give it roughly a 6.5 out of 10 (i.e. the passing grade in school) because some scenes did make me laugh out loud.

I mean, yes, many of the jokes were desperate and the writing overall didn't have a good flow to it, but the movie didn't altogether fail in my opinion.
