The mob really messed up

The more I think about this movie, the more I wonder how stupid were the mobsters?

There were better ways to get what they wanted.

First, killing the Doctor was a huge mistake. She was virtually the only one that could get the mother out. Just intimidate her and force her to testify that the mother improved and could be released.

Then threatening to kill Marla’s mother whom she obviously didn’t care for. Why not use Fran (the girlfriend)? I think Marla might have agreed if Fran was threatened since she obviously loved her.

As for breaking the mother out? Why would they do it in the day time and so recklessly? No subtlety whatsoever.

I just find it hard to believe that major mobsters with all that success and experience would fail like this.
