Never was too fond of Clara either. She wasn't bad, but she could be awfully catty towards Aunt Bea even though they were good friends.
Warren didn't stand a chance. It was about impossible to replace Don Knotts. They tried to make him a bumbler like Barney. But it just didn't work.
On Cheers it worked when they had to replace Coach who was vague and confused all the time. They brought in a much younger vague and confused character. I wonder if it would've worked if TAGS brought in a very young deputy, someone who had just graduated from the police academy. Or if they brought in an old guy who was close to retirement age and getting kinda senile.
Aunt Bea has become Uncle Bee. He beat Opie to the punch!
Otis, the town drunk would run the local AA meetings.
They would never be able to make an episode like "Opie and the Spoiled Kid" because little brats like that are now indulged and their behavior is excused as ADD. If the dad took this kid "to the woodshed" as he did in the original TAGS episode, Andy would have to arrest him for child abuse.
In a very early episode I recall that Barney told Andy that he bought his parents a new septic tank for their anniversary.
Of course a quarter could actually BUY you something back in the sixties. I remember buying two candy bars for that price (the most important kid purchase!)
A quarter wasn't a bad tip, but Barney's suggestion that he go back to the diner and retrieve one of the two quarters was bad! lol
If you recall, the next day when Barney was at the diner again, Olive tried to return one quarter. She thought they had mistakenly left two which they had.
Barney told her to keep it. "Do you think you're dealing with a couple of pikers?"
He sure liked to take credit for his "generosity".
Back then stores were really serious about shoplifters. In one episode Barney disguises himself as a mannequin to find someone who is stealing from a local store.
Today they don't stop you even if they SEE you. I know a woman who works in the local drugstore and she says that they aren't allowed to detain people even if they see them putting merchandise in their pockets. Our local Wal Mart (and probably others) has told clerks not to stop people who walk out without paying. It's for their own safety because clerks have been stabbed or shot when they detain thieves.
I own the series too. I started watching it again since I haven't seen it for months. I always forget just how funny this show is!
The "No Smoking" episode is a classic. I laugh like crazy and I don't even smoke. Actually I'm more like Matthew in this episode. I can be a big pain in the butt around smokers. But they don't listen anyway. So I try to keep my mouth shut.
Stephen Root is hilarious. I liked his list of eligible women to marry.
When it comes to Phil Hartman, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Such a tragedy. And it's weirdly coincidental how his character Bill had a number of people who wanted to kill him. Or else he thought someone was trying to kill him. I wonder if it gave the writers chills after his untimely death.
Forgot about that. Yeah, he and Andy seemed to eat out at the diner for lunch. And Barney ate breakfast there too. Of course Aunt Bee used to bring their lunches to the courthouse. I don't think Barney paid for any of the groceries.
But he sure wasn't a big tipper! In one episode they arrived back at the courthouse after lunch and Barney said you don't mind leaving a tip when the meal is good. He had put down a quarter. Andy said he put down a quarter too and Barney was going to go back to the diner and take one of the quarters back.
Andy said, "Olive (the waitress) is a widow with four children". Barney relented and said that they should just let her keep it. What a sport!
Almost everything Barney did cracked me up. Like the times he would be trying to intimidate prisoners and referred to the jailhouse as , "Life here on the rock!...etc."
I always laugh at the episode when Barney and Gomer go into the supposedly haunted house to retrieve Opie's baseball. Both were scared out of their wits.
Any episode with Ernest T. Bass makes me laugh. The show was wise in using such an oddball character sparingly. He was so funny.
I can't help thinking that Barney was kinda cheap. Thelma Lou obviously didn't have a high paying job. I suppose she was a secretary in an office. Helen Crump was a school teacher. Yet both women had houses (probably rentals) while Barney had a rented room.
He had no car payments, no family to support like Andy did, yet he always seemed on the verge of poverty.
She did have a lot of knowledge about the alien. But too bad that the Marines placed more faith in their weapons than in Ripley's firsthand knowledge.
I also think Burke figured that Ripley would be his ally in bringing back some live aliens. He wrongly assumed that she would be happy to assist him in smuggling back the eggs and "we will be set for life". She had lost her license and he figured that she would be happy to make money off the aliens.
