I mean it’s so true. You knew you were in Wes Anderson’s world, but it wasn’t enjoyable. It felt way more stylistic - the star studded cast. The perfectly framed ironically costumed character against utter chaos. It’s tired. No real substance, at least that’s how I felt.
It was just so darn pompous.
Grand Budapest Hôtel is truly excellent and Owen Wilson and Bill Murray are blink and you miss it in there.
Unfortunately for me, and fortunately for you, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson are barely in this movie.
It’s like he fluctuates. Royal Tenenbaums was a masterpiece, and I didn’t feel that same level of affection for The Life Aquatic or Darjeeling Limited. But the Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, and Grand Budapest Hotel were perfect.
I don’t know about his *worst* (I really did not enjoy Darjeeling limited). Like you, I’ve seen all of his films and genuinely love most of them. Grand Budapest Hôtel is possibly one of my favorite movies of all time. That being said, as I was watching this last night, I could not help but feel Wes Anderson had achieved a whole new levels of pompous with The French Dispatch.
There are parts of the film I enjoyed, particularly the first vignette - though I felt very put off by Tilda Swinton and Adrien Brody (who was slightly more tolerable than in Grand Budapest). I felt that pompousness very strongly during the second vignette featuring Frances McDormand and Timothee Chalamet, and that’s when the film lost me. I really couldn’t tell you what the third vignette was about.
Agree. Watching this movie for the first time in 5+ years and I’m horrified that all of Miranda’s friends are telling her she’s being ridiculous and needs to forgive her lying, cheating husband. Wtf.
Same - I actually watch this documentary at least once or twice a year. It is pretty violent, otherwise I think I'd watch it more. It is just so well done and so fascinating.
1. Sounds boring. A good amount of the viewers are adults who watched this show as a kid, meaning they are in their 30s. I stopped watching Full House reruns in college. Much, much too saccharine.
2. Not necessary.
I always loved Steve in the original series and was extremely surprised to find myself cheering for Matt in seasons 1 and 2 of Fuller House. But, I think they won me over when they developed the relationship with Steve more at the end of Season 2 and in Season 3. I mean, judging by the end of Season 3 - they could milk this for another 20 years if they want lol.
