The movie was very subtle, but I found some hidden layers. 1. He visits a temple/shrine. Maybe to pay respects to someone who died? 2. His sister asks him why he doesn't visit their father who is in a nursing home and "not the same person as before". His categoric "no" and his reaction to this subject hints at s very difficult, maybe abusive relationship with his father. He hugs his sister and then cries. Maybe he wants to be close to her, but can't or won't return home. 3. All his little rituals, repetitive and dependable, seam to me like coping mechanisms. He wants to be in charge of every aspect of his life, maybe because he wasn't in control for a long time. To me he seams like a very sensitive, traumatized person, who tries to heal and be left alone by everyone. There's no hint of him being in prison in the movie. From his interaction with his sister we found out: that they are estranged but he cares about her, their father is in a nursing home and "not the same person as before"( probably abusive), and not even in this circumstance will he visit him. His simple life is his own, on his own terms, and lived with intention and peace of mind. Things he apparently didn't get from his family. Jack sold his soul to the devil and also sacrificed his wife in order to become nr. 1. He got his wish, and his show became the most viewed one since the moon landing. The "trippy" bit is Jack in some sort of purgatory, where he realizes what he has done and what forces he was playing with. When he returns to the studio, he is surrounded by dead bodies and the police siren getting closer. It doesn't matter if he killed Lilly and the others ( I believe it was the devil who killed all of them including Lilly). But that's not a very good defense I'm afraid. He will go to prison or a mental institution and his life is ruined. That's the message of the movie: if you make deals with the dey, your wish might come true, but your life will be destroyed. Yes Jack sold his soul to the devil. His wife died as part of the deal, so once he made that payment, he would get what he wanted: to be Nr 1, and better than Johnny Carson. When that show aired, best believe no one was talking about Johnny Carson, but about Jack Delray. So he got his wish. But the payment was too high. Not only did he lose his wife, but his soul now belongs to the devil. He is now in some sort of purgatory. He is trapped in a endless circle of his show, but a twisted version of it and memories of his wife and his Grove ceremonies. He knows it's not real, but can't wake up. He tries to use Carmichael's line: Dreamer, wake up. Nothing works. He is now back in the studio, with dead bodies all around him, and the police siren getting closer. He will either be sent to prison, or a mental institution. Either way, his life is ruined by his ambition and greed. P.s. Minnie is not the only one who he sacrificed. He also got June to do the summoning, even if she didn't want to and told him how dangerous it was. Gus also warned him and didn't want to take part in it. Now they are both dead because of Jack. Could be. I thought the fact that Michael also had a coloring book was a clue, not just a coincidence. Also, the boys in his group were talking about something that happened at the marshland, and the police were involved. Phillip is an unreliable narrator and he doesn't really separate reality from fantasy, so it could all be in his head ( I have no problem with that). That's what I like about this movie, it keeps You guessing and nothing is spoonfed to us. I think it's because of the marketing. It's supposed to be a horror, but it's not really. Although it has some horror elements, it's more an exploration of trauma and it's effects. The director said it's a character study at its core. People probably expected Anabelle or The boy, and instead got a subtle and unsettling descent into madness caused by deep trauma. Still, a low rating. If Maurice isn't real, Michael isn't real. The TV turns itself on with the news of Michael's disappearance, so it could be just a hallucination. Or maybe Michel is the representation of the other boy that went missing when Phillip was young. Remember "Maurice" tells him: "This happened before, in your time" 20 minutes. One of the most unfunny, cringy, obnoxious movie ina long time. 1. Ethan's kidnapper said: "I only take pictures. They pick the kid. " 2. Because the kids were probably sold to some big wigs who had connections. 3. He worked on an oil rig or something. 4. Because he killed at least one person while trying to save his son. View all replies >
