Bodies don’t rot in L.A.? A whole new level of stupid Just one novel or all 3? The amazing dis- and re-appearing martial skills Wow this was bad, but... What ever happened to... MAKE SOMETHING NEW FFS! I have to ask again... HUGE plot hole and lastly, THE biggest problem with Ahsoka (the show not the character) View all posts >

"Dr. Who has always been diverse" then spends the entire article talking about companions and side characters... 🙄 It's an interesting question that I had while reading the book too, especially given how short even the "stable" eras were depicted as being. One possible answer is that the repeated extinctions selected for organisms that could retain memories and skills during dehydration and basically pickup where they left off. I settled on thinking of the San Ti as highly evolved tardigrades which, on Earth, can go dormant and survive any number of insanely harsh environments. Now... that said, we don't see any highly evolved tardigrades running around on Earth. Basically down to suspension of disbelief I guess. Honestly I think the author just felt that the three body problem (the astrophysical one) was just really cool and so just used it as a plot device in the book as a way to highly motivate the San Ti to find another planet vs. just making them aggressive/hostile for no explained reason. And if you STILL didn't get it... Ep 6 waxes rhapsodic about how the alien race they're visiting "doesn't have a word in their language for social status or class and they have 3 genders!" AND Burnham picks the fat chick to continue the foot race instead of having her work on the tech which IS supposedly her specialty (but hey fat people can win races too!) AND the whole point of the race, to select a "sacrifice" aka someone who gets killed, is so blindingly obvious to anyone BUT Burnham and the crew that it's literally painful to watch. I'm reminded of the line in Galaxy Quest where Guy exasperatedly asks: "Don't you people ever WATCH the show?!!!" This has now descended to the level of unintended parody. I really wish the guys at South Park were viewers! Two reasons. ;^) Oh yeah, each season (and even each episode) is exponentially worse. Last 2.5 seasons I've just been hate-watching it to see just how bad bad can get. He basically looks like an old white guy and understands military discipline and order and getting things done vs. spending an hour talking about feelings before making a decision, so he had to be humbled and proven wrong and schooled by a young woman of color. This becomes explicit in the 4th episode, just in case anyone was dull enough to miss it previously. I'm as liberal and "woke" as it gets, but even I think this is the worst kind of drivel. Right? I saw some compilation video on YouTube that included a snip from S1 and I was like "Wow she wasn't that big back then." Yeah, honestly now it's more morbid curiosity or hate-watching. Ep2 is even dumber if that's even conceivable. I mean script continuity and cause-and-effect seem to be completely foreign concepts. Just nothing makes ANY sense. Right? How is that even possible? "I'll disable the engines to the warp bubble collapses." Then the damaged ship warps out 2 seconds later after Burnham is dramatically rescued. Huh? How on earth does Cronenberg allow himself to be associated with this dreck? The Expanse may be the best, most "realistic" SF series ever at least in terms of obeying the laws of physics (to a great extent) and depicting realistic human/societal behavior. Certainly in the top 2 or 3. There is some "magic" technology, but of extraterrestrial origin and the characters end up utilizing it without any clue how it actually works. View all replies >
