I wouldn't say they intentionally opened the gates but rather they were either intimidated by the sheer number of people that outnumber them to some probably being Trump supports. If you don't got the necessary gear to hold them back, nothing you can do with just 3-5 folks guard one checkpoint. Other areas where they did resist were easily overwhelmed and broken past as shown in the video above. Most did resist nonetheless.
