Black people are entitled to reparations

Their ancestors deserved to be paid for their work. Each state benefited financially from free Labor. Well that was wrong and it should be righted.

That money needs to go somewhere. Obviously their descendants should get it, either as money, more programs/housing, or a combination of all.

reply

how about no?

reply

Not to mention the ongoing disadvantages they suffer due to the legacy of slavery which was racial apartheid.

reply

Again how about no?

this is one of the stupidest ideas ive ever heard. lets list some problems

1. are we going to make sure ancestors of the people who sold america slaves also contributes?

2. are we going to do extensive deep dive ancestory and DNA tests. and base payements off "how black" or "how oppressed" your ancestors were. should ancestors of well treated slaves get less?

3. plenty of immigrants like the irish while not slaves were exploited were horribly paid lower class labor. we going to get reparations going for that?

4. how far back we going? why are you stopping there in terms of fixing injustices in the past? why have you narrowed it so much?

reply

Irish faced discrimination but were effectively free to:

1) quit their jobs
2) form syndicates/unions
3) move city/state/country
4) sue people in court
5) press charges for assualt

Do you think the slaves could do those things?

reply

wow all you could do was address one point? i didnt say there were treated the same. i said why are you only repaying one bad treatment and not the other?

Most stayed in slum tenements near the ports where they arrived and lived in basements and attics with no water, sanitation, or daylight. Many children took to begging, and men often spent what little money they had on alcohol.

It was the first of many. “No Irish need apply” turned up at least 29 times in Times classifieds advertising for jobs, and the sentiment was wider than the frequency of those exact words.Hundreds of other classified ads specified that job applicants be Protestant, or American, effectively excluding Irish-Catholic immigrants. The Irish immigrants were not well-liked and often treated badly.

your dodge and concession is noted.

reply

You certainly don't seem to think they were capable of anything...

I'm guessing you still feel Black people are incapable of a lot of things to this day, yes?

reply

1) If they have wealth, yes. If no, they still aren't eligible for reparations in my book, but it will be hard to get them to pay money/resources they don't possess.
2) If necessary, yes. I'm not sure how you would determine who was more oppressed. Paying them equally is better than no reparations at all.
3) Every other group already got their reparations, including slave owners.
4) Race-based slavery in America. Because, America is the beneficiary of it, and the one paying the debt. Common sense.

reply

Only descendants of slave-owners should bear any burden, if at all, go after them...if there are any left.

That Civil War killed a lot of people before the 20th century...

reply

There was no apartheid in America...what are you smoking? Slaves lived closely with their host families, and even integrated in a lot cases, how the F do you think Black people in the USA have majority European DNA!?

My word...

reply

Would black people be willing to accept reparations in the form of just having the USA treasury type it into the US treasury computer and then electronically deposited into individual black people's bank accounts just like income tax returns are electronically deposited into people's bank accounts? The reparations will not be taxed away from people or added on to the US public debt.

Or do black people want the reparations taxed away from americans?

reply

I think the reparations would have to come from somewhere, namely the wealthy and corporations. If your idea of it works, I don't think anyone would care where it came from, as long as it was paid. I don't know enough about taxes or treasury to evaluate your plan.

reply

Ticketsplease,

Your thread title says that black people are entitled to repatriations while the OP appears to be referring to reparations. Are you aware of your malapropism?

reply

Lol, I didn't even notice that. I would advise black Americans against repatriating to Africa!

reply

Corrected but that does raise an interesting question, if they did wish to return to their ancestral homeland, maybe that should be facilitated, with money for housing etc when they arrive. So both reparations and repatriation.

reply

They better go after it now because soon they will be below the population of Latinos, and they will never vote for it.

reply

They already are.

reply

I both agree and disagree. If "black" means descendants of slavery, then yes. If "black" means the "one drop rule" or immigrants like Obama or Kamala, then no. If the wealthy can get reparations, then no, they should PAY reparations. Reparations should be payed by the holders of the wealth, and only to those who have had generational labor and/or property stolen.

reply

"Black people are entitled to repatriations"

You want then returned to Africa? I'm not sure how many will go for that. But, if you say so I guess....

reply

I AGREE!!!

5 MILLION PER PERSON! NO! 6!!!

Lmao. Imagine people not responsible for something paying money to people that never experienced something. There's already enough gibsmedats available in the US, give me a break. Buck up and work.

reply

640,000 American lives lost, paid in full with interest. Get a job.

reply
