shareGood question and kind of a tough one . When I first saw it, I was a teenager myself and happened to be working in the theater where it appeared. Back then, it had an impact on me. I recently re-watched it late one night when I was unable to sleep. It caught my eye because I remembered that impact and it was the first time I had stumbled onto it in decades. That's why it immediately came to mind when the topic of your thread appeared. It transported me back to that time and I was also re-watching it through different eyes, which is why I'm somewhat struggling with the rating. It was much more flawed for me that night and I found myself agreeing with some of the criticism on that board. However, all things considered, I think it still deserves a solid 7 rating. And like others on that board suggested, I'd love to see a remake. It's a great story.

The past had an ugliness that often gets sanitized in the current environment of political correctness. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that society has improved in that regard... but racism, sexism, casual violence is often expunged from period pieces. People said terrible things, they treated certain people like subhumans... and just because things have improved doesn't mean things should be portrayed in a way that is historically inaccurate. However, because filmmaking is a business... it is unlikely that many will have the balls to tell stories about how things truly were.
I think Mississippi Burning comes close.

Hollywood is in the business to make money. If they're making a comedy, they're going to ignore some of the bad stuff.
If they're making a drama they're more likely to pay attention to that stuff.
