Memory, from the Broadway musicale Cats. “Memory, all alone in the moonlight/I was beautiful then”. Yes, lachrymose and perhaps even mawkish, and I don’t care. It is also moving, beautiful, poignant and completely human—and I have never liked Andrew Lloyd Webber. I took my then-girlfriend to see Cats when it was in Boston, and, when I cried, she grabbed my hand, and squeezed it tenderly. It was a perfect moment.

Un Bel Di, from Puccini’s Opera, Madama Butterfly. I have posted about songs by Eva Cassidy, that are moving because of her interpretations of them. Un Bel Di has that transcendent passion written into its sheet music. It is a song that simultaneously breaks your heart and expands your soul. If this song does not move you to tears, then you are probably dead.

No, a song does not have to sad to invoke tears. Eva Cassidy’s Gospel song, How Can I Keep From Singing, is chockablock with praise and love for The Lord God, but it is so profoundly heartfelt that we cry tears of joy. Nor is Somewhere, Over The Rainbow, a sad song, though it could be a bit wistful; but Eva’s transcendent rendition and phrasing of it melts every heart.

Many of these songs trigger a time in my life as a child, a boy, a young man, and an adult for various reasons. Sometimes it's just the song, for others it was related to a moment in time:

The Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
Moonshadow - Cat Stevens
Starry Starry Night - Don McLean
Send in the Clowns - Judy Collins
The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Old Man - Neil Young
In the Wake of Poseidon / In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
I still can't say Goodbye (Live) - Chet Atkins
I don't have the heart - James Ingram
Marlene Dietrich's favorite poem - Peter Murphy
Blackbird - The Beatles
Nightswimming - R.E.M.
Ode to my Family - The Cranberries
Northern Sky - Nick Drake
New Years Day & The Unforgettable Fire - U2
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
Porcelain - Moby
100 Years - 5 for Fighting

Never heard his music, but it seems likes hes grown up and matured nowadays. It seems he mostly just wants to be left alone. Can you imagine be followed by cameras 24/7

It makes me sad that the younger generation thinks this is real music
