I don't like the consumerist culture that has pushed it into the mainstream, robbing the significance of the practice. Sure, the symbols hold meaning for each individual person or group who decides to get them, lasting their lifetimes. But what does it say in a society where everyone can have them simply because they want it and have the money to due so?

The whole point is to have something to say, display a certain status or service, and be able to stand out, which is hard to do when it is commonplace.
