Best Road Movies 1930-70s

"Harry and Tonto" is mine, but I'll add more (if necessary)

'Easy Rider' is the first one that came to mind for me.

It Happened One Night (1934).

Badlands (1973)
The Searchers (1958)
Duel (1971 TV movie)

"Duel" was the first on your list that I didn't see, so I will watch it today. Thanks!

reply

I first saw it many years ago, and then again about a year or so ago. Still thought it was pretty good. One word: Speilberg.

reply

I didn't like it (never liked his movies), but I've known about this movie, and thought I'd love it. I'm still dizzy and disoriented!

reply

There are a lot of his movies I haven't seen, and don't really care to, so I understand your feelings.

reply

I've seen quite a bit of his over the years, sometimes not knowing who directed until after, but you'll never find out new things if you keep watching the same stuff, and I thank your recommendations - I loved almost every movie you've ever posted.... I try to keep a 90/10 ratio (at least) between stuff I've never seen before, and then when I'm in a "slump", I might revert to something great I haven't seen in a while, or I might watch Hitchcock, or something lean and/or thrilling. Or something fun like "Paper Moon", which I saw the last day I was in SF (despite watching it on my laptop).

I realize the significance of Duel so I am in the minority, but I absolutely hated it. It reminded me of a Road Runner cartoon where instead of just stepping to the side to avoid a falling tree, the coyote would run lengthwise only to be flattened by the forest. There were so many times the character could have chosen a wiser, more logical path to break off from the crazy truck driver. At one time, as I recall, they were BOTH in a cafe away from their vehicles. He could have called the police to avoid further entanglements. Hate that film and it turned out to be iconic in it's own way.

reply

I agree that he had several chances to break away, but where's the suspense in that? Heck, where's the story then?

reply

The fact that the driver did not act in a rational way diminished any suspense for me. I thought it was stupid, unreal. But I realize I am in the minority and I'm happy that it spoke to you. I have hated that film since I saw it back in 1971. They made many they superior films during that tv time slot...Tribes and The Point come to mind.
