Is it overrated? Is it worth it? Cause I just recently got a free trial of Netflix, and so far I like it. Though, as far as movies go, it's not all I thought it would be. I was quick to assume that Netflix was like a library of endless options of movies. But it's not really. I mean it has some movies that I like, but overall I mostly like it for binge watching series like Black Mirror and Breaking Bad. It also has quite a bit of documentaries I like as well.
It's a mixed bag for me. I enjoy being able to watch tv shows with no commercials; but even when it was a new and shiny, fun new toy to play with, it had its limits. One of the biggest reasons my family was sold on watching it was because they had all the Star Trek shows on there (and still do). But the problem is, Netflix is as limited in its selections as they are diverse.
One reason I had fun a few years ago, was because they had some fascinating documentaries on. Now many that were more interesting are gone. I dislike how so many good things disappear, only to be replaced by crappy stuff, or maybe a few gems every season. Many of the documentaries they have now are about subjects I could care less about. I get tired of stuff about Hitler, conspiracy theories, or JFK's assassination. I'm especially tired of global warming (or "climate change" as they call it now) being pushed on the nature documentaries.
They also have issues with keeping good movies and taking on a lot of bad ones. While it's nice to see new stuff every few months, many of the films are things I either have seen, have on DVD, or don't want to watch. Or I'm loving seeing some movie on there, and then it disappears. That's why I keep insisting to my parents that we back up our favorite shows with DVD sets (expensive as that is), because someday, Netflix might not have them.
I also hate to say this, but Netflix is also a dumping ground for ideas both Hollywood and the tv industry initially rejected. Many of those original shows or movies Netflix has made are absolute dog crap. There are a few exceptions, such as "Trollhunters," "Voltron," or "Stranger Things," but still....
I did figure out recently that you could have multiple profiles on one account, and frankly, I was tired of getting movie/tv show suggestions trying to please four people on my mother's profile, so I made my own, as did dad. Last thing we need are anime suggestions blaring at us because my brother spent the last few nights watching those.
