Were any mafia members as cool or charismatic as those depicted in movies?

I doubt it. Even Gotti was probably just a glorified meat head.

I like mafia movies and I do think it's an interesting subject, but mafia members are disgusting people. In real life they're not appealing at all, I think Gotti is one of the worst. His kid caused his own death by being stupid. There, I've said it. Am I now going to end up with cement shoes on the bottom of some lake?

I do believe you need a certain charisma to be a leader (and to be a bit crazy) so I'm sure a lot of them were.

One mobster I remember hearing about on the news that has stuck with me is Carmen "The Cheeseman" DiNunzio. He was the 300lb proprietor of The Fresh Cheese Shop in Boston's North End.
