Transgender mental disorder?

If I thought "This hand on my arm should NOT be there!! I was born with the wrong hand." Then I go get that hand sliced off to make myself feel better is that mentally healthy?? That's what transgender people are doing.. Before you say THATS AN UNFAIR COMPARISON both mental health issues cause someone to slice off a major body part that they were given at birth. Is it mentally stable to cut off your own major organs?

reply

Why do you care?
Are you feeling something you can't address with your family and friends?

Welcome to Moviechat, you will find a very accepting and lovely bunch here regardless of your circumstances

The door to happiness is just a few steps away Amigo and you have the key

reply

Luckily it's a very rare disorder, regardless of what the media says. They make up less than 0.1% of any population in any country.

reply

The American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association and most recently the World Health Organization all say it is not a mental disorder.

reply

You've got that right!

reply

Yes, while mental health disorders are on the rise globally. I wouldn't put my faith in them.

They mantain a double standard anyway as body integrity dysphoria does not have the same classification.

reply

If it's not a mental disorder, then what is it? Seems mental to me.

😎

reply

You're a mental disorder.

reply

If it's not a mental disorder, then health insurance can't cover it. Health insurance doesn't cover cosmetic stuff. They won't even cover laser eye surgery. Sex change is very expensive. Do you want to pay for it?

reply

Health insurance denied my wisdom tooth extraction surgery as cosmetic.

Of course this happened 2 weeks after the dentist office had already gotten paid by the same insurance.

LOL

reply

If I say this man that died a long time ago, Jesus Christ, is God and savior of us, is this not mental illness?? Is this even normal?

Yet there is no current respectable bodies say that religion is mental illness.

reply

That's because religion is conditioned. Being brainwashed is also not considered a mental illness. Besides, believing in something for which is their no proof one way or the other is not the same as denying the reality of your own identity.

There are folks who create their own religions and see themselves as a supreme being or prophet. I would certainly question their mental state.

reply

If it's not a mental disorder, then what is it? It seems mental to me.

😎

reply

What is it? Just regular people trying to be happy with the short time they have here on earth and to fit into their own skin. Live and let live, right? If they aren't hurting anyone else, what's the big deal?

reply

I didn't say it was a big deal, although full disclosure: I tend to gag when I think of the subject.

I just want to know if it's not a mental disorder, what is it? What makes a person decide to cut off (or add) organs from their bodies, and change sex? I cannot comprehend that.

😎

reply

I don't know. It kind of reminds me of religion, which is why I'm Agnostic. Maybe nothing is known or can be known ,except for the people who are dealing with it? I agree that its hard to comprehend, but then again, who am I to judge?

reply

Wikipedia says that transsexualism was included for the first time in 1980 in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) under the term Gender Identity Disorder.

In the DSM-5 Gender Identity Disorder was replaced by Gender Dysphoria;
the focus is no longer on identity, but on the distress that trans people feel may experience when their biological sexes do not line up with said identities. Sounds like they're trying to be PC there. And stress sounds like part of a mental disorder to me.

The article then goes on with a lot of gobbledygook, and really doesn't say WHAT it is. Once again, sounds like the PC Police have put pressure on them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_transsexual_and_transgender_people

Bottom Line: They used to classify it as a mental disorder, but now they seem to be too scared to say what the heck it is. So we don't know.

To me, it's still a mental disorder. But that's just me.

😎

reply

That's fine. But fact is, there's really no cut and dry evidence for either side. So until then, constructive discussion is a good thing. Even though we disagree, I respect your opinion.

reply

Yep, that seems to be what Wikipedia is saying when you cut through all the gobbledygook. Maybe some day they'll make up their friggin' minds. I also respect your opinion. BTW, I'm also an Agnostic.

reply

Gay people tend to gag as well when theyre first trying to swallow the concept.

Just keep trying, it'll get easier.

reply

And yet drugs are illegal, some forms of body modification are illegal, motorcycle helmets and seat belts are mandatory in many states; inconsistent and hypocritical of our society.

reply

I think eventually they are gonna figure out how to actually change peoples gender for real down to switching chromosomes and transgenders won't have to be a thing anymore.

reply

I think you're putting too much stock in just how far medical technology has gone. It's nowhere near as advanced as what the movies or tv shows claim. We're over a century, maybe two, away from being able to do any of that.

reply

Maybe, but i didn't give a time stamp though :-)

There's a HUGE variety of people with a huge variety of motives seeking medical transition. Some think they'll be better off as the other sex, some have fetishes, some are faddists (it's in vogue), some have parents who seem to be pushing it, some have serious mental issues, and yes, some do seem to be born that way, and insist that they are not their biological sex from the moment they grasp the difference between boys and girls.

So you can't make a lot of generalizations about the mental state of trans people, any more than you can make generalizations about the mental state of all firemen, or all members of any group.

reply

Funny you mention Firemen. One of the sub plots of The Sopranos was one of the Mob guys has homosexual tendencies. He gets ratted out and flees elsewhere and falls in with a carpenter / fireman who is gay. It's all done tastefully, to the point where it's sorta funny, but I do get the message that it's likely you might run into a homosexual person (or bi or whatever) anywhere and everywhere. I'm old enough that I thought I'd only run into two or three people in my lifetime who "played for the other team."
I love that phrase. She's pretty foxy, but she Plays for the Other Team. To be a little crude, plays = lays? Sorry, just a play on words, not trying to get smutty. But it makes me laugh.

reply

I think that episode was called "Johnny Cakes."

reply

Sounds like you know The Sopranos. I forget most of the details, but the Soprano mob was hugely homophobic. This doesn't surprise me one bit, but I do think the producers were being pro-active and provocative.
I loved The Sopranos !

reply

Me, too. One of my all time favorites. Are you going to watch the movie when it comes out? They're filming it now with James Gandolfini's son playing young Tony.

reply

I didn't know this was going on. I'd like to see the Deadwood movie, but I'll have to wait until it goes OnDemand.
Tough to catch lightning in a bottle twice, but good luck to the young Gandolfini and however they flesh out the cast.

reply

If a man says he is Jesus Christ and really believes it, does that make him Jesus Christ? or mentally ill?

If a woman says she is invisible and really believes it, is she invisible? Or mentally ill?

If a person says they are a martian and really believes it, are they are martian? Or mentally ill?

So how does a man thinking he is a woman make him a woman? He is not. Same if a woman thinks she is a man.

reply

You are not in a position to say what a person's gender orientation is. If you were a professional in the field you might have some badly needed perspective. Now go sign some anti abortion rights legislation.

reply

A man is born with a penis, a woman is born with a vagina. Simple biology.

reply

What about intersex? They are born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the typical definitions of female or male.

reply

The number of intersex is surprisingly high. In terms of general population it is low, but it's way more common than I first thought. I've read as many as one in sixty.

And this is for WickedStorm, gender is not the same as biological sex.

reply

That is a rare exception, and in that case, obviously a physical condition.

However, when a person is clearly born with a particular set of sexual organs, wanting to be something else does not change the reality.

reply

I could sit on a rock therefore there's no such thing as chairs.

reply

You obviously are not a Scientist, much less a physician or biologist.

reply

Not a scientist, but I know reality.

reply

[deleted]

[deleted]

No, they are not false. Thinking you are something you are not does not change reality.

reply

[deleted]

Who's going to pay for that? Why would you want to redirect funding away from something with more direct benefits to the population? Why not at least research prevention instead of treatment? Does xenoestrogenic pollution contribute to transgenderism? Maybe we should outlaw birth control pills, which pollute our public waterways.

reply

"If a man says he is Jesus Christ and really believes it, does that make him Jesus Christ? or mentally ill?"

There was a man who said he was Jesus Christ, the Messiah, Saviour, son of God, and really believed it. Was he mentally ill?

How about all the people who believe that he was everything he said he was. Are they mentally ill too?

reply

I am talking modern day, not bible stories.

But yes, if today a man was walking around claiming to be Jesus Christ, he would be mentally ill. If people actually believed it, maybe they are delusional.

Also, keep in mind that in the bible story, people did not believe he was "the son of God". Were they "bigoted" or "sonofgodophobic"?

reply

Sorry, but that's a very weak argument.

The only difference between then and now is time.

Either you believe what's written in the bible, or you don't, and many millions do. They absolutely believe Jesus Christ was the Messiah, is the Saviour, and the son of God. Now. Today. They have for many hundreds of years.

Jesus's disciples believed the same, and gradually more and more people came to believe it.

Are they all, even today, mentally ill? Was Jesus mentally ill? That's what you're positing according to your own logic.

reply

In all cases, you are describing people suffering from a psychotic break with reality.

reply

And thinking you are a woman when you are clearly a man is not a break from reality?

reply

It is. Transgenderism = psychosis.

reply

No. Psychosis is a severe mental illness, with severe symptoms such as hallucinations, incoherent speech, extreme paranoia, etc. Psychotic episodes are most common, meaning it comes and then goes. Someone who's perpetually psychotic would be unable to function, which is obviously not the case with people who are transgender.

Psychosis invades all aspects of a person's life, it's not confined to one belief or feeling.

The causes of psychosis are mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. Extreme sleep deprivation and some drugs can also induce it.

reply

To try to be serious about your OP, I'm hetero and I don't think I would want to venture out into LBGT territory. It's gotta be tough. So if someone has the certainty they should be living a different life, I will give them the benefit.
