Frozen food that's actually good

Or at least decent. A lot of it's terrible.

Marie Callender's chicken pot pies. A bit too much crust for me, but the gravy/sauce is creamy and tasty, the chicken isn't spongy and weird, and the veggies are good for frozen. I've tried many of their others, didn't like them except turkey's okay.

Stouffer's Mac and cheese, done in the oven so the top gets a nice golden brown crust. I don't buy it often but I love it.

Stouffer's chicken ala king with rice. I like it for most of the reasons I like MC's chicken pot pies.

Most all frozen pizzas. The only exceptions are those awful Celeste individual pizzas and Stouffer's French bread pizza. Some are better than others but almost all are at least decent.

Tonight I had a pizza with cauliflower crust, which I wasn't at all sure about getting. It had uncured pepperoni on top and I doctored it up with fresh garlic, fresh basil, fresh zucchini, and (don't everyone groan at once) anchovies. It was good! The crust was slightly strange but if I didn't know, I'd have never guessed it was cauliflower.

Oh, I like those imitation crab sticks.

reply

You philistine, LOL!

reply

There are frozen imitation crab sticks?

Frozen salmon is tricky, unless you know what you're doing. It gets freezer burn easily. Frozen shrimp is good, but it too gets burnt unless you eat it quickly.

reply

In your country imitation crab sticks are not frozen?

reply

Nope. They're in the fresh fish section, along with lox.

Cary Grant was one of Hollywood's most notorious cheapskates, and would serve guests TV dinners, when they were first coming on the market. I remember that they were covered in aluminum foil rather than plastic. What a difference today -- the frozen food section is full of interesting stuff from companies I never heard of. Indian food, Thai food, in addition to the usual suspects like trusty cheese ravioli. I'll try something here and there and sometimes it is pretty good. Can't think of a specific name right now as I said a lot are brands I never heard of and have forgotten the names. But Marie Callender and Stouffer are usually safe bets.

reply

Ha ha, too funny! Although, TV dinners probably weren't all that cheap at the time, seeing as they'd just come out, and would have been seen as a fun novelty ... the first time 😀

I just remembered another really good one: DiGiorno pizza. Normally, frozen pizzas taste like cardboard. This stuff tastes fresh. The new line of stuffed crust pizza, though, sucks balls.

reply

My frozen pizzas are vastly better now that I have purchased a metal pizza pan. They are very inexpensive and work great. To get a crispy crust usually meant putting the pizza directly on the oven rack, which I never liked because cheese and toppings inevitably fall off and make a mess on the bottom of the oven. I don't know why it took me so long to buy a pizza pan but it works great.

reply

I've never had one of those stuffed crust pizzas. I tend to go for the thin-crusted ones.

reply

You say that as if sucking balls were a bad thing. I love having my boys sucked, by the right woman.

reply

Usually, when people say something "sucks balls", they mean "donkey balls", not regular balls. I just forgot to throw the "donkey" bit in there: https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/sucks+donkey+balls

reply

Well, I saw an opportunity and I took it!

Amys Kitchen. I like their frozen Indian meals and the health stats aren't too bad compared to other brands.

I've been curious about cauliflower crust, not just for the health reasons, but its one of my favorite vegetables. Might have to try it eventually.

reply

We've got Amy's Kitchen here. I tried a few but didn't love any of them. Plus, they're $$$.

I really liked the cauliflower crust! I'm always trying to eat more veggies, so this came as a very pleasant surprise. If you like pizza, and cauliflower, I think you'd like it.

reply

AMY'S CHEESE ENCHILADAS...FUCKING SPLENDID.

Have you tried any Innovasian frozen foods? As the name implies, it's Asian cuisine; seems to be mainly Chinese (I haven't tried everything).

I'll give 'em mixed reviews. Stay away from anything with noodles. Said noodles are frozen together in one solid block. If you follow their directions, you end up with a solid noodle block that's a little thawed around the outside.

On the other hand, their other dishes range from "meh, OK" to "pretty good." The fried rice dishes (chicken or vegetable) are particularly good IMO.

reply

No, never heard of it until now. I do like Asian food though, so if it's in the markets here I'd give it a try. Recently I bought some seafood paella from Trader Joe's which looks good but I haven't tried it yet.

I'll look for Innovasion. Thanks :)

some frozenstir frys are pretty good, but that packaged sauce has a nasty after taste

i got some frozen food to make my own stir fry with only soy sauce and salt n pepper, i'll let you know how it turns out

reply

How did your stir fry turn out? What did you use, frozen veggies, soy sauce, s&p, and ?

I've tried one frozen stir fry and it was pretty good, except for the sauce. I threw away the sauce and used my own seasoning for the 2nd half of the package.

reply

it went ok, i got another go at it tomorrow, didn't soak my rice noodles and scraped my scrambled eggs and the mixed vegetables didnt go well with the stripped chicken, pretty salty, i didn't wait till the chicken was finished before i added the frozen veggies and i steamed it so it's pretty dry, also didn't thinly cut my garlic t

reply

Practice makes perfect, as they say. Tonight you'll know what to do and what not to do 👍

Hope you're feeling better by now. Eating too fast, and with the garlic not diced up finely enough can do that.

reply

the rice noodles are packaged partially cooked so i thought i could just fry em with the scrambled eggs and then i was going to add the rest of the already cooked ingrediants. cook the chicken and veggies and then put it to the side and do noodles and eggs

should've just went with broccoli though

reply

i scarfed it down and don't feel too good, it was too much, too salty, i did throw out a lot of soggy veggies too, im also curious how many chunks of garlic i ate : (

reply

My favorite frozen foods are spanakopita (this is a ton of work when you make from scratch), Stouffer’s apple turnovers and frozen pasta.

reply

I can't imagine making spanakopita from scratch! You must be an excellent cook. I've never seen Stouffer's turnovers in grocery stores here.

Italian food in general seems to freeze best.

reply

Stouffers by far. I don't eat breakfast food so I usually eat a frozen meal. This is the best.
