Do you have a dog?

What breed? I'm thinking about getting a border-collie. They seem to be great dogs. How are they as guard dogs?

I do not have a dog.

Mine is a Chiweenie (half dachshund/half chihuahua). So called 'designer breed'. We call them mutts. He's a good dog but sometimes thinks he's a six pound Rottweiler.

As for Border Collies, I've never had one myself but I know a few people who have and they have nothing but praise for them.

When I was a kid, my cousins got a rescue puppy. As far as we can figure, he was half dachshund and half pitmix. His head and shoulders were so heavy, his chest so deep with those short legs that his chest dragged the ground and the hide was like leather! He was so funny but he was loyal to those three boys.
Convinced he was a big dog ;)

I do now. Well it's not mine, my girlfiend had adopted a Staffordshire terrier-Basenj mix, and since we've moved in together, I also live with the dog. I don't really like dogs (been bit before...), but she's kinda cool. We've become buddies.

No, but I have a cat.

Yes. He's a 7-year-old rescue and it turns out he's an American Dingo aka Carolina Dog, but when I adopted him I thought he was a shepherd mix.

Border collies are great dogs, but as many have pointed out, they're not easy dogs and not a good match for most people. They're not the best guard dogs, but if you need anything and everything herded (including you), they're your guy!

It's great you're doing research before getting a dog. No matter which breed, including mutts, the most important thing is getting a good match for you in temperament and and to fit your lifestyle. That's specific to the individual dog, so if you're not good at reading them, find someone who is and take them with you when you go looking.

It's called Carolina Dog on Wikipedia (I was not familiar) and what a cutie!!

He says thank you 🤗

I've gotten in the habit of calling him an American Dingo because if IRL I say he's a Carolina Dog, people assume that means I got him in the Carolinas.

I would love a King Charles Spaniel.

They are super cute.
