Youtube comment section

I would like some opinions from people here. I feel that content providers should not have the ability to turn off the comments for their videos. What the f ck is the point of that?

I always, repeat, I always go to the comment section to see what people have to say about the video. SOMETIMES, I go to the comment section, BEFORE I even watch the video. When I see "comments are turned off," I just X the video out.

I guess I'm curious to know how many other people feel the way I do.

Primarily I'm there to watch the videos, not for the comments. Too often the comments turn into a sh!t storm, with people bashing one another about their heads for no good reason, so I get why some turn off the comments. Sometimes it's frustrating because I'd like to comment, but whatever.

It depends. Some content providers have said they don't control it. Youtube sometimes shuts the comments down if children are in the videos. I've seen comments active and then later shutdown after a certain time period because they can no longer be monitored properly.

I also notice comments off with political or advertising videos. Those are more likely disabled by the content providers.

I like to read comments, but I can understand about disabling comments from predators and negative comments re: companies.

Youtube comment sections are often cesspools. I'm surprised comments haven't been disabled across the whole site already.

"Youtube comment sections are often cesspools."

Too often they really are. For a while I stopped reading them for that reason. No point, unless you happen to like cesspools, in which case good luck to you.

I don't skip the video b/c comments are disabled. After all, the video itself is what drew me there.

But for stuff I like, they're rarely disabled and the comments there are 90% troll-less.

I enjoy the Youtube comments, quite a lot of them are clever or sweet (I mostly use YT for music so I don't know about other vids)

Never saw 'comments turned off' before but I do sometimes get 'this video is unavailable in your area' and like a typical New Yorker I'm like 'are you shitting me?!? This is New York!' LOL

I agree. Content providers should be able to take criticism. They should also be able to block commentators who are being belligerent or deceitful.

A youtube channel is your channel, meaning the person posting the content gets to decide how to run it. If they want comments, cool. If not, that's their prerogative.

reply

Yeah. I really don't care either way, most of the time. If someone knows a video they're posting is likely to cause a sh!tstorm, I don't blame them at all for disabling comments.
