Unpopular opinions only, what's the most overrated tv show right now?

Like name something that's on currently. You don't even have to hate it.

It might even be something that you like. A show that you think is fine but massively overrated & overhyped by everyone. Or just something that you're just sick of hearing about

I'll go first, Stranger Things. I genuinely enjoy it for the most part. I'm a 90s kid, so I don't have the 80s nostalgia thing. Also, the show seems repetitive. Kids investigate, Adults are always unaware of sh*t, The upside down is getting through, we have to close the rift, eleven does her Jazz hands routine

But honestly, everyone & their grandma make it seem like the best thing since sliced bread. Which I genuinely don't get

reply

Stranger Things is for sure. I have no respect for gimmicks. You strip away the nostalgia and put the show in a contemporary setting, you have a show most folks are ignoring. The writing doesn't stand on its own.

reply

The lifeless Lion King Remake made one & a half billion. Why? Simply because of Nostalgia. People eat that sh*t up.

Nostalgia sells, like really REALLY well.

People will watch or buy anything just cause of Nostalgic feels. It's basically like a drug or something

reply

Any show that's said to be one "that everybody's talking about!".

reply

So basically, Netflix Originals. They have some solid shows but most times, people just overhype average ones

reply

To some extent, yeah I can agree, but I was really referring to regular network TV.

reply

This might be just a me thing but I've genuinely haven't heard anything buzzworthy or people hyping about a network show since maybe the first season or two of This is Us

Which is another show that I personally think is massively overrated

reply

Another red flag is the familiar tagline "The most anticipated [program, movie, etc.] of the year/season..."

reply

That's a great observation. It's like the hype machine is trying to prime its own pump and get the public talking about it, sight as of yet unseen.

reply

Another one to beware of is "Critics and audiences agree..."

How can this be if the film hasn't even been released yet? The only thing I can think of is maybe influential critics are invited to an exclusive pre-release screening. The only way an audience could see it would be as a sneak preview; I don't know how common this practice is these days.

Either way, the number of people polled would be extremely limited, which increases the chances of sampling error. We're supposed to believe this hype based on the opinion of a handful of observers?

reply

I HAVENT WATCHED TELEVISION IN ALMOST TWO YEARS...PHYSICAL MEDIA AND A LITTLE YOUTUBE ONLY.

reply

I have no idea what's on network TV these days. Haven't seen any network broadcasts for almost a dozen years. I was never into Seinfeld. My dad liked it, and sure, it was OK but I didn't think it was the be-all and end-all of the TV world. I liked Friends, but I also understand that it's not to everyone's taste, just like Seinfeld was for me. And noo, Friends isn't the be-all and end-all either, but I can understand that it struck a note with a lot of folks. I think Frasier is good, and I like Cheers too, but I didn't see them until after their initial runs were over. They were broadcast on my bowling night. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I did enjoy the first few seasons of ER, but even that kind of fell off my radar.

The Office
Weird & depressing
Everyone loves it but me

reply

Agreed.

I can watch it, but people act like it's clever writing.

I think every single character in that show is bat$hit crazy.
I would never hang out outside of the office with any of these people.

And the Pam and Jim relationship?
You are grown people that are ruining other peoples lives because you can't man up and say you like each other.

reply

Family Guy,
although the hype died down in the last few years.

reply

Mare of Eastown seems to be getting lots of hype. As a general rule hyped up shows rarely live up to it. The hype tends to put me off even trying to watch it.

reply

Any show that has viewers.

reply

Especially of it draws a lot of viewers. It means the program was designed to target the lowest common denominator.

Quantity, not quality.
