IQ minimums to operate a vehicle?

What do you think?
IQ proof to drive a car?
Might fix a number of issues out there

reply

Have you ever taken an IQ test? I don't see why there would be much correlation between IQ score and driving ability.

Driving is a just a skill, and even complete morons can be skilled. Whether naturally or through training.

You think all NASCAR drivers are geniuses?

reply

Mine is one of those "general reference" commentaries about the smarts level of average drivers.

I want them to be bright enough to understand how to use blinkers, understand proper stopping distances, know how to safely change lanes... real basic stuff.... was thinking perhaps a basic smarts IQ test would help sort out who should get to pilot a 3000 LBS vehicle while staring at their phone.

reply

Common curtesy and manners may not be linked to intelligence.

reply

yeah.. but I'm thinking about safety first.

reply

I think everyone who has passed a test knows how to do all the things you mentioned, but not everyone has the common courtesy to do so. People can still be intelligent and rude.

The skills for NASCAR, which comprises extremely talented drivers and tech support, are totally different from the defensive skills required for surviving in mundane traffic. NASCAR drivers may be on the radio to their pit, but they are not playing with their cellphone. NASCAR drivers are wearing HANS devices to prevent neck-break in a crash. They are wearing NOMEX suits to protect them from fire as a result of a crash. NASCAR (and other racing) drivers are a million times more aware of their mortality than the assholes you see on the street, and they drive accordingly. Everything in a NASCAR driver’s environment reminds him that he could die. Joe commuter has no such reminders.

NASCAR is by no means my favorite form of motor spots, but I have tremendous respect for it, and none whatsoever for ignorant trivialities like the gadfly OP.

reply

I wasn't insulting NASCAR drivers; simply offering a brief rhetorical question to illustrate my view.

I'm sure there are plenty of fantastic NASCAR drivers with high IQs, and many other (equally skilled) ones with low IQs. I'd further argue the same holds true in regards to your everyday, casual drivers on the road.

Point being, there's very little correlation between one's "intelligence" (as measured by IQ tests), and their ability to skillfully and safely operate a vehicle.

what about maybe ALWAYS having a written test every time you get license renewed, with many trick questions to see who is bright enough to pass:

When needing to change lanes, pick the best option:
A: just swing on over, whoever is behind you that is their problem
B: check rearview and blind spots, begin signaling, check for 3 car lengths space for safety, look behind again, change lanes
C: set your cell phone down on your right leg so you can keep reading it, steer with your left leg, signaling is optional, keep left hand free to flip the bird if anyone honks

We probably need an IQ test to create a thread. Ha!

reply

again... unrelated.... why?

reply

See? Looks like we do need the IQ test lol.

reply

Maybe you are right. If we required IQs here, people would be bright enough to stay on topic. :D

reply

Concentration! Stay on topic or risk getting ignored!

reply

soooo... what ARE your thoughts about limiting the level of stupid people allowed to steer a heavy car around your children?

reply

Easy. Just make it illegal for women to drive, Saudi style! Problem solved. Don't you agreeee? Hahaha... Gosh, you're so dumb.

reply

wait, I'M dumb for not realizing you think women are stupid??

reply

Of course you're dumb, dummy. Hahahaha... jeez

reply

wow, you are right. I just didn't see that coming. I feel so stupid now, thank you for opening my eyes. :) Friends now?

reply

I'd probably need to give you an IQ test in order to be my friend. Haahhahahaha.. Oh, man!

Sorry, can't help it. You're too easy lol. Hahahaha

reply

I'm too easy... that's what your MAMA told me. :D

reply

Imagine actually coming up with the TOTALLY BRILLIANT IDEA of having an IQ test for driving a car lol. Hahahahaha...

I mean, pfffftt... hahahahhaha

reply

I forgot... we're still on for Sunday, right? Your place or mine?

reply

I was just messing with you, man. Lol.

reply

you and me both bro :)

High IQ types can be bad drivers. Too cerebral to fuss over mundane tasks like driving. Plus, hand-eye coordination does not always correlate with intelligence. How many geniuses are NASCAR drivers?

They need to give the written test more often. Drivers seem to forget those rules the second they get their permit. Could reduce some of the gaping and hestitating at four way stops. Insurance companies could offer “advanced driver” policies to drivers willing to undergo more training. The more skilled drivers out on the roads, the more chance others will fall in line.

reply

I would PAY for advanced driving training and lower insurance! Brilliant idea! I already know lots of evasion and proper attention from being a motorcyclist

reply

‘Insurance companies could offer “advanced driver” policies to drivers willing to undergo more training.’

My drivers license is a commercial drivers license (CDL) and I have always thought insurance companies should take that into consideration on private policies.

reply

i know plenty of smart people who are bad drivers. driving is more of a physical thing involving hand eye coordination, vision and reflexes.

reply

Um, no. Dmv is a pain in the ass. Imagine giving the average citizen more red tape to deal with...

reply

9?

reply

You need a degree to pass the British test. It gets harder every year, I'd be hard pushed to pass it now i think 😕
