Will men’s wallets become a thing of the past?

Apple Pay is replacing physical credit cards, which in turn are making cash obsolete.

reply

Watches were supposed to be replaced by cell phones and they're still going strong. Even watches that aren't connected to digital services.

reply

Having said that, watches can be considered items of jewellery.

reply

I agree. But, there's a good function as well.

I don't believe in the Digital Economy being sustainable for the long term. Electricity, power, and electronics are awesome, but subject to natural decay and entropy. Even green technology is exceptionally flawed as it has a higher rate of degradation than non-green alternatives.

Long and short, like paper and watches, the Digital systems reduce their use, but couldn't kill them.

reply

I don’t like people being forced down a particular path, but I see ever encroaching on everyday life.

reply

Typewriters are and are never coming back.

However vinyl records are still around and always have been since the turntable has never really left.

Cash and coins are not going anywhere and as long as we have a need of wallets for those they won't stop making credit cards.

reply

I very really use coins 🪙

My credit cards are on my phone.

I’ve seen a huge sea change in the last 5 years - it’ll be interesting to see where this goes.

reply

I don't spend coins either.
Collect them in a jar and deposit them when it's full.
But they and cash and credit cards will never be obsolete.

reply

Let’s see, eh?

reply

Cash will be king for a while longer.

reply

Maybe?

reply

Wallets will never be obsolete. In addition to cash, cards, and change, they are also used for other types of things. Membership cards, Blood type card, photos of family, etc.

Leather wallets are the worst thing ever made. I have a Skinny Wallet and it's amazing. It even has a zippered pocket.

reply

“Membership cards, Blood type card, photos of family, etc”

I have all these on my phone now.

reply

How can you access any of that without power or you've become disabled ? Phones only last about 1 day. I would recommend to keep a spare phone in case your phone is lost or stolen.

reply

Everything is uploaded to the Cloud. I always have a portable charger with me.

reply

YEAH...BUT WHAT ABOUT WHEN THE ALIENS TURN YOUR PHONE INTO A BRAINWASHING DEVICE THAT YOU WILL NEED TO SMASH AGAINST A ROCK AND RUN AWAY FROM?....HOW YOU GONNA PLAY SUDOKU THEN?

reply

No doubt my alien wife has already pulled that trick on me. Luckily, Sudoku is not for me.

THIS GUY HAS AN ANSWER FOR EVERYTHING^

AND I AM SO JEALOUS.🙂

I finally figured it out. Kowalski, you act exactly like Tribore from Final Space (2016). Yes it's a compliment, he's hilarious.

reply

There's wall outlets out in nature ? Hmmm. 🤔🤔🤔

reply

Sorry, I meant portable power banks - they’re pretty good nowadays.

reply

Yep. I have a whole bunch of power banks. I even have a car jump starter with a 37,000 mAh capacity.

reply

KINKY.

reply

Men's coin purses become a thing of the past for them once they meet me.

I was unaware of the Saxon definition, but it still works.

reply

Gulp!

reply

I was unaware of that definition, too. 😬

Mighty dainty coins those. On the flip side, you can find sturdy stitched leather coin purses with a sturdy zipper along one thin side, and a handle/loop at the other end that doesn't hold coins. These might bear a strong resemblance to a "slapper," a flatter shaped "blackjack," which were fairly standard police carry up until the 1940s or so. The "original" ones were filled with a small/medium handful of smaller lead shot. They were quite discreetly carried on one's belt or in one's pocket, and when held in the hand, only extended ~3-5" and concentrated a fair bit of weight in to a very small area. You'd see both cops and bad guys knock each other out with them in the movies /comics of the time, but you'd really have to hold back your swing, as they could easily be lethal if you really let 'em have it.

Police were instructed to only use them on the large muscle groups of the limbs, and even a medium strength "slap" would be enough to put that limb out of commission for a while. I've heard of bones easily broken, including the collar bone, if you put enough oomf in in to it.

It's a shame even the modern "coin purse" versions are *very* illegal in iirc every state, as they seem quite comfy to carry and conceal. Plus, you'll never regret not having that three cents to avoid getting $0.97 back to annoyingly jingle when you walked.

Oddly enough, investigating self-defense laws, specifically my home state of California, knives, as long as they are visibly carried are completely legal to carry as well as to defend oneself, up to lethally here. Any impact weapon, like a baseball bat, you better have *strong* alibis to have one, like a mitt and be on a route directly to/from an actual baseball game and at least a teammate or two to corroborate your story, or you could be in big trouble. Weird state, this.

I've stopped using cash. But even if credit is on your phone, you still need an ID, a driver's license, car registration, a library card, a photo of your girl, blah blah blah.

reply

“you still need an ID, a driver's license, car registration, a library card, a photo of your girl”.

I have all that on my phone.

reply

Okay. Now tell me what happens if a traffic cop pulls you over for a ticket? He's not gonna look for your ID on your phone.

reply

I haven’t been pulled over by the cops in decades.

reply

Most states require you to carry your driver's license when you drive. I don't think a phone counts. Scofflaw!

reply

That’s what glove compartments are for 😉

reply

Personally I like using cash for some daily expenses such as going to restaurants.

reply

I get points and vouchers on my cards, so I use them as much as possible.

reply

Cash will be here forever.

reply

Nah, Big Brother wants us to stop using cash so he has complete control.

reply

Agreed! However, there’s always some bright spark that’ll know how to get round the system.

reply

Sure, there will be a black market.

reply

Of course there will. Indoctrination motivates people.

reply

Let’s see, eh?
