Weird how he cares so much about the treatment of natives...

... when he had history of terrible treatment of women.

Brando was never a respectable person in my opinion. He let fame go to his head and thought way too much of himself. That would explain why he was allegedly so hard to work with on movie sets.

Early Virtue Signaler.

reply

Probably. He was such a trailblazer.

quick question:
How do you distinguish Virtue Signalers from people who actually give a shit about somebody other than themselves?
(or is it the same thing?)

reply

Investigate Brando's history of involvement with Native American issues. See if he did anything other than the highly publicized and newsworthy Sacheen Littlefeather incident. Did he ever do anything else when nobody was noticing? Contributions, building schools on reserves, or what have you? I have no idea myself and I don't care to look it up. If he never did anything else when the reporters were not watching, he was just a Virtue Signaler.

The Virtue Signaler's main motivation is to alert others to how virtuous and enlightened they are, without actually having to do anything tiresome or expensive about it. This is accomplished by loudly proclaiming their support where they are assured others will hear it. Virtue Signalers usually flit from cause to cause, like all the people who change their picture frames weekly on Facebook to indicate support for "The Latest Thing".

somebody with that kind of exposure/fame could do a lot of good just by spreading the word though.
If he agreed with her cause of ,
"Littlefeather rejected the trophy as part of the actor’s protest of Hollywood’s depictions of Native American people."
and then gave up an oscar in order to let her voice that problem and raise awareness ,
then he did a good thing didnt he?

..then he did a good thing didnt he?

Possibly. Maybe.

But virtue signalers are a different breed. They might do something really good, but if the only reason is to look good doing it while making damned sure everyone knows they did, then they are still virtue signalers who don't necessarily care about the cause, only how they can exploit the cause to the approval of onlookers.

Like whynotwriteme, I don't know if Brando actually cared for the cause nor do I care, or if the Oscar itself meant anything to him (he had previously won one earlier in his career). If the cause was important and it was a big personal sacrifice to give up an Oscar to get the message heard, then he did something good for the right reason.

Besides, did Brando really give up an Oscar? The Academy didn't present it to anyone else and Brando is considered to have won two Oscars even today.

Who are the real "virtue signallers"?

The people who sneak "blessed" into every sentence they speak, that's who.

reply

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

reply

I didn't mistreat any natives or women.

reply

I don't really have a burning need to justify myself every day.
