When was the absolute peak of Val Kilmer's career

Was it around 1995-1997? I think that Val was undoubtedly A-list by the time that he landed the Batman role.

Did his behavior on The Island of Dr. Moreau (and the subsequent the bombing of that film) show ultimately that Hollywood had no interest in him? I suppose that Val was still considered a top-tier leading man (meaning that he was an "above the title" billed star in big budgeted motion pictures) until after he did that Red Planet movie.

About there. Tombstone (1993), his greatest role IMO, catapulted him into plush roles in big time movies like Heat and Batman. His downfall began when he flamed out as batman followed by the shitshow Island of Dr. Moreau. Shame, I liked him as an actor and he turned in solid if forgettable performances afterwards in movies like The Salton Sea, The Saint, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Spartan. He hasn't done anything memorable in fifteen years, and if Top Gun II flames out, that will probably be the end of his career in Hollywood. Still has done enough to have his image put on the screen when the Academy Awards honors actors that died in whatever year.

Joel Schumacher pretty much said that Val Kilmer's performance in Tombstone landed him the Batman role after Michael Keaton decided that he didn't want to do it anymore.
