WTF Happened to STEVE GUTTENBERG?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZtVooFktJs

Steve Guttenberg was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s. He broke out with the Police Academy movies and became a famous, light-leading man. He played the ladies' man, Mahoney, in Police Academy 1 through 4, where he got to romance Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone, among others, but bailed on the series to take on bigger films. Initially, this strategy was widely successful, with him starring in the biggest movie of 1987, Three Men and a Baby. Yet, he could never follow it up with another sizeable hit. What's worse is the fact that critics had it out for him, with his name becoming a punchline in the 90s, although in hindsight, his acting was fine. Some of his movies, like The Boyfriend School (aka Don't Tell Her It's Me) are underrated gems. So join us as we try to determine WTF Happened to Steve Guttenberg!

He's one of those guys I could never understand how he became a star. I never found him funny, I never found him a good actor, I never found him in the slightest bit charismatic. With the Three men and... movies I always think of it as 'Selleck and Danson. And the other one'. I remember that line about him on The Simpsons in 'The Stonecutters Song', and I think 'Yeah, exactly'.

He did charisma - he wasn't ugly - his comedic timing/tone in comedies was decent
But he was always a part of an ensemble - paired up with other decent actors, he did good
As a sole lead - I'm not sure. Comedies were his thing - or at least it's how studios saw it -
The last few Police Academies were utter crap - in terms of writing. Curiously enough, actors paid the price - lol

Now... do we have any decent comedy films these days? Nope - everything has been turned into sfx porn galore.
He should have made a move to TV -

Some compare him to Hanks - well, when it comes to comedies, I'd take this dude over Hanks any time of the week. The reason why Hanks is still relevant is because of drama films. GUTTENBERG did OK in the cocoon, but I always felt like he'd break character and start spewing out comedy lines at any moment.

In the 80's - you had naked gun, police academy, hot shots, airplane, etc, etc, etc - the golden age of comedy. What do we have now? ^^

Oh, there were some great comedies in the 80s, but I never found him great in anything. I agree about a move to TV. He seemed to me more of a TV actor than a movie star.
