Nancy on Jo Being a lesbian Icon.

TVGO: We've gotta ask. Did you know Jo from Facts of Life is a lesbian icon?

McKeon: (Laughs) I haven't heard that, but I think that's a wonderful thing. I think that was helpful to girls our age to have that kind of a role model, to see a girl who was strong and standing up for what she believed in, living her life on her own terms and not bowing to peer pressure and becoming a cookie-cutter person. And it was great to go to work and speak your mind all day long. I got the greatest lines and comebacks!

I was a kid and I used to watch the show "the Facts of Life" literally she never came across to me as a"lesbian" if anything a cool Tomboy that likes cute Guys like Eddy her bf from the first seasons, and several other guy's she's dated. I think it's how people interpret it. Blair was the real feminine one ( like me) lol I often say I am like Blair :). I guess is how you interpret it.
Maybe I was too young, after all I was born in the 80's started watching reruns recently and as an adult she doesn't come across to me that way. I do agree she does have the best lines and comebacks. I love her chemistry btw blair (lisa) and Her. Too bad there were no cute guys, Oh George Clooney towards the end of the show wow, he was nice eye candy lol. I do like all the seasons, and I enjoyed the show.

This has been debated on Facts of Life forums for years. Jo was not a lesbian.

Basically a lesbian icon is someone a lesbian would admire. Looks at Judy Garland. She is a favorite among a few of my gay guy friends. They just adore her. But she wasn't gay.

Speaking of the forums, any good ones you can recommend besides Sitcomsonline?

Looking at some episodes like 'Man in The Attic' for example; she has said some gay stuff that leads people to believe that she was gay or bi.....

Blair: What's that music?

Jo: You're dreaming, there's music in your dream, I'M in your dream.

Blair: Will these nightmares never stop?

Jo: I'm leaving your dream now Blair.

Season 6, "Man in the Attic".

It, could be, however to me she never came across as a lesbian on the show, to me she was more of a tomboy that liked guys. Jo, came across as a street girl to me that's, all. I do think that she did care for Blair as a friend. I like their friendly bond as a rich peppy girl and a street girl with a heart of gold that bumped heads from time to time. I guess I never read to much into it. I loved the show and she was a great. character. I guess everyone has a different opinion.

'At least HE's ready to prove how he feels about me'. Jo said this to Blair about Eddie in "Teenage Marriage".

'A guy in his underwear is no thrill to me unless there's Howy Cosell and a referee at Riverside.' Jo said this in "Next Door".

But Judy Garland married TWO gay men, so, apparently she had some mass appeal to gay men.
