What happened to her career?

After Somersault everyone expected her to become the next Nicole Kidman. She had it all: good looks, incredible talent, wonderful personality, etc. I was expecting her to be a mainstay at the Academy Awards and red carpets. It did not turn out that way though. She's done well for herself, but is nowhere close to the superstar that she was expected to become. What happened?

who this hottie?

I think Sucker Punch was supposed to expand her career but that didn't do to well with critics to say the least.

Bad choices (more so in her Hollywood projects), some personal scandal that did her some damage (the whole Ryan Phillippe thing didn't do her any favours) and she sadly got herself typecast in Wife/Girlfriend roles for years now. As you said she's done well for herself but she hasn't lived up to her potential of her early career.

She's only 35, so she could turn it around. It's a shame her best work has been done outside Hollywood. For me to see the best of Abbie, Somersault, Candy and Bright Star are the ones. She has some good films I like on her C.V, like A Good Year, Seven Psychopaths, Elizabeth the Golden Age and the Oscar winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. But even in those films, she's not a standout. But her C.V is littered with a ton of crap and Wife/Girlfriend roles that underuse her badly. I just get the feeling with Abbie, she's just happy to get the work and pick up the cheque type actress.

I was going to say maybe stepping into TV world might give her a boost so she might get better roles. And it seems she's doing just that with Jack Ryan TV show in 2018. So fingers crossed it goes well for her. I honestly do think she's a talent, maybe going back to do a few films in Australia could be a good idea that could give her a role she can bite into while still doing the pay cheque films in Hollywood.

“Incredible” means “NOT credible.” You are right: her alleged talent was not credible.

Please do not words you do not understand.

You are nasty R_kane. Very, very nasty.

I thumbs-downed your post.

Why on earth would you think that? For me she was always Amber Heard like actress. Meaning untalented un-charismatric pretty face that Hollywood producers try to happen. There was no chance for her to become something bigger.
I said it in Julia Styles post and can repeat it here.

There is the same pattern with all those young actresses that Hollywood producers try to happen by picking them up and starting casting in everything.

They play teens and young adults. Then they turn 25-28 and age out of roles of school-girls or young romantic interest. And then it's either they have talent, charisma and transcend to adult roles a-la Kate Winslet, Johhanson. Portman, Jolie, Barrymore, Lawrence etc.

Or they don't have talent and public doesn't care about them so they stopped being cast as they are too old for school girls and new 22-years old replaces them as Young Romantic Interest of main character. And they just vanish overnight. Like with Julia Stiles, Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachael Leigh Cook, Ali Larter, Shannon Elizabeth, Eliza Dushku etc.

For example Chloë Grace Moretz is 26 and aged out of roles of school girls and is on the verge of vanishing. They did cast her in lead roles as young adult in movies and tv shows. But she is boring, can't act and public simply don't care about her. So she is about to be stopped cast as lead.

Now Hollywood tries to push Rachel Zegler as New Teen Star. By suddenly casting her in everything. They would try this for few years before giving up.

There is a third category. Those who were lucky to marry A-list star and so they get free publicity and are "kinda there" in everyone's faces and occasionally even get cast in something. Jessica Biel married Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Garner married Ben Affleck.

But she was amazing in Somersault and Candy. Have you seen those films?

reply

No. I watched trailers and they look lime small Australian movies. They don't look like nothing amazing to me. Just ordinary small movies.

She never had a chance to become big. Her face is too mundane and ordinary. It's one of those faces you cant remember. And you can't single them out in movies. Same reason why Sienna Miller failed in career. Despite Hollywood trying to make her happen.

Same with Amber Heard who only got Aquaman role because of Depp. Otherwise she was one of those actresses with forgettable face.

It's truly amazing how Jennifer Lawrence could make a career since she has same problem. But Hollywood kept pushing her into franchises. And she was funny in interviews.

Hillary Duff hasn't done half bad, post-Lizzie McGuirre

Lots of very talented actors and actresses choose to forego A-List status, when they recognize the amount of life you have to sacrifice in order to achieve such a thing. Cornish could be one such person

reply

So true.

It's not a coincidence that so many of the most well-adjusted people in The Biz choose not to live in Hollywood, and aren't A-Listers
