Why change name spelling from Mendez to Mendes?

She's credited in Children of the Corn as Mendez. I doubt a movie will have a typo. What was the gain in that?

Let me guess, you're one of those jealous fangirls who are in love with Ryan Gosling.

No, not at all! Tom Welling is my type. It's just a legitimate question.

I read an early bio that she was born in. Houston,Texas.
I assumed by the spelling that she is Mexican.

Now, suddenly, she's a Cuban.

Edit: I was just reading an article in "evene".
The French press still has her noted as being born in Houston, Texas.

Mendes is a common spelling. It's disputed whether she was born in Texas or Florida but she was raised in California. She's not suddenly Cuban, stating she's Cuban can be traced back at least 12 years.

Movie credits have typos all the time. A lot of the time it's a mistake, but sometimes it's on purpose/for comedic effect.

Considering her lack of fame at the time the movie was released, it probably was a typo. While we are accustomed to seeing Spanish surnames end in "ez" it is my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong) that those with a more "Portuguese" spelling come from parts of Spain near the border with Portugal. Mendes is also a Portuguese name.
