According to Ask Auziello:

A new female character will be introduced later this season, and get this: According to exec producer Carlton Cuse, "She does not appear in a flashback, she is not an Other, and she is not one of the survivors of Flight 815." What does that leave? You tell me!

You really picked a wrong time to stop watching it. I know that Season 2 was really awful but Season 3 started really bad but it's awesome again just like Season 1. I hope you get a chance to watch some of Season 3.
