Biggest Oscar Snub

(From In Memoriam)
Fred Ward, Paul Sorvino or Anne Heche?

reply

They weren't included?

Damn! That's a disgrace. All three of them made important contributions to some very memorable films.

Although I have a particular affinity for Fred Ward (I just loved that guy's vibe) and Anne Heche's passing was particularly tragic and a waste (espeecially in terms of her age), I guess Paul Sorvino is the biggest snub. He was part of the Oscar-nominated Goodfellas, which many people believe, in hindsight, should have won Best Picture in 1990. His Goodfellas co-star, Ray Liotta also died last year (would it have been that hard to have shown a clip featuring both men onscreen together, in tribute to them both?), and I'm guessing he was mentioned. And Mira Sorvino paying a tearful tribute to her dad when she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1995, is one of the sweetest moments in Oscar history (although, I suppose that's been tarnished, since Sorvino effectively repudiated her win, by dismissing Woody Allen - the scourge of Mia Farrow's insane vendetta, and the brainless and unquestioning acceptance of Dylan Farrow's story, strikes again...)

I forgot he was in Goodfellas. I only remembered him from Law and Order! and it turns out he wasn't even on it all that long.
But o man, Mira Sorvino's Oscar speech!! what a tear jerker.

reply

Paulie's one of the best characters in Goodfellas (i.e. the one 'honest' crook, so to speak). But I do love the scene where Liotta's desperate marked-man Henry Hill begs him for money, and Paulie good-naturedly think he's doing Henry a favour by giving him a wad of cash, which an ungrateful Henry says in narration "it wasn't even enough to pay for the coffin."

reply

The Academy Awards telecast ALWAYS snubs a handful a well-known thespian, then offer a lame explanation about commercial break time requirements. It's BS

reply

Why weren't they included? Were they canceled or something?

reply

Why would they be?

Sorvino and Ward seemed like decent guys, and although Sorvino had a torrid and tragic background, it seems that she was victimised rather than a victimiser.

reply

I can't find any information online on why they were left out.

reply

I have always liked Fred Ward. Solid actor. RIP

reply

Awesome character actor, particularly fun in Tremors.

reply

Tremors and Remo Williams. I don't know what happened to him after those 2 movies.

reply

He's also great in Southern Comfort, The Right Stuff and the underrated Big Business, and a few Robert Altman films (i.e. Short Cuts and The Player).

I need to see Miami Blues, and Henry and June, since he plays lead roles in both.

Year after year, they snub actors, yet include agents, producers, etc. that the public never heard of. The entire "Oscar" sideshow has devolved into a joke, including their "In Memoriam" segment. By far the definitive memorial montage is done every year by TCM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IxrVWs80Zw
