However, in all fairness, over the years the AR has evolved into a beautifully engineered rifle.
This is why people like you can't be taken seriously. Kyle clearly said he went for a rifle over a pistol or a shotgun as he was not old enough for a pistol and there were no shotguns in stock at the shop. In addition to an AR15 looking cool.

Also, I don't think it was ownership at issue, it was issue of the legal right to carry.
Because most firearm crime is done with handguns, they have greater restrictions which vary by state.
You'd have to look at the state laws for specifics.
