For Everyone Who Hates the Thought of Matt Smith as The Doctor...

Just remember that everyone hated Daniel Craig as Bond until we saw him as Bond.

All we are saying is give Matt Smith a chance.

@MovieMan2009: And I quite agree.

Well Technically Matt would be the 12th doctor, since Tenant would of played the 10th and 11th doctor since he did regenerate once before but didn't change personality and appearance. And going by original doctor who with having only 12 regenerations he would technically only have one left without "cheating".

But he is the 11th in the aspect of different appearance etc..

reply

Well of course they are going to "cheat". But I don't think of it as cheating at all--it is like counting everyone who has ever played Sherlock Holmes... what is "canon"? does that guy who was the Doctor once in a lousy TV movie for 90 minutes really count? I say NO. If you count him, then you have to count Peter Cushing who did that Doctor Who and the Daleks movie in the 1960's! Or Rowan Atkinson who played him for a laugh on a Comedy Special.

paul mcgann from the 1996 tv movie so does count - lousy script, but he himself was fantastic. he is counted officially as the eighth doctor, confirmed by the current series using an image of him in a montage of previous doctors in both 'the next doctor' (2008 christmas special) and 'human nature/family of blood' (series 3). it was supposedly the eighth doctor who fought in the time war before regenerating into christopher eccleston - if they ever do a flashback to the time war, it would be great to see paul return. he also portrayed the doctor in loads of (admittedly not-strictly-canon) radio plays for years after the tv movie and they're really, really good.

peter cushing, on the other hand, doesn't count. 'dr. who and the daleks' and 'daleks invasion earth: 2150 a.d.' weren't produced in any way by the bbc - they were stand alone movies inspired by the tv series. cushing's doctor wasn't even a timelord, he was human - just a wacky inventor who discovered space/time travel.

as for rowan atkinson in the children in need sketch 'doctor who and the curse of fatal death' (also starring richard e. grant, jim broadbent, hugh grant and joanna lumley as subsequent doctors) - well, they don't count either. it was a spoof.

same goes for richard e. grant's second animated portrayal in the webcast 'the scream of shalka' - that was made by cosgrove hall films (though sanctioned by the bbc), and (as good as it was) just counts as related non-canon spin-off, like the novels and radio plays.

as for david tennant's partial aborted regeneration in 'the stolen earth'/'journey's end' (series 4), i'm guessing that doesn't count as one of his twelve allotted regenerations, as he siphoned off the regenerative energy into his spare hand before his mind and physiology was altered. a timelord possesses enough regenerative energy for twelve full regenerations, so the worst that will do is possibly make his final change a bit dodgy and he'll turn into keira knightley, calista flockhart or someone equally insubstantial.

and anyway, who are we kidding. they'll find a way to keep him going past 13 lives as long as people are still watching the show - they did it for the master, after all. this is sci-fi. anything can happen - all they have to do to explain something away is make something up that explains it away. easy.

OH! Dylan Moran would be amazing, I think! He's brilliant, I love him in Black Books. . . Anyway, yes, agreed!

Not to mention that if Tennant's abortive regeneration had counted as one of the standard ones, then Matt Smith would have to be the Valyard--and we'll all be in trouble, because A: he'd be a villain, and B: somehow the Time Lords would have to be busted out of the Time Lock.

Of course, before he was going to lobotomize the Star Whale, he mentioned he'd have to find a new name after doing such a heinous deed . . .
