Just because in retrospect the factcheckers found no evidence of Russian misinformation, doesn't mean they should not have fact checked. How long was the story demoted for?

This is exactly why the concept of "mis/disinformation" and the desire to suppress it can be so insidious. So much hinges on who is using that label and what their agenda is. It can conveniently be applied at opportune moments, and conveniently unapplied afterwards when those moments have passed.

I thought the govt. didn't have the authority to tell private companies what to do when it came to public speech. Isn't that what the First Amendment is all about?

"Fact check" just means in-group ideological vetting.
