What did that girl say to Tom Powers

What did that girl say to Tom Powers that upset him so much that he stormed out of the hideout where he was supposed to remain in hiding until the gang war had calmed down.

reply

She intimated that they had had sex while Tom was totally drunk, and was really laying it on. He hated to be out of control in any way(especially to a woman!), and he left angrily.

reply

Was that girl Joan Blondell?

reply

No, that was Mia Marvin as Jane. Joan Blondell was Matts wife.

reply

That girl was also Paddy Ryan's girl, so Tommy shouldn't have slept with her.

reply

I don't believe that Jane was Paddy's girl, just a moll who let Paddy use her flat for a hideout.

reply

She was Paddy's girl, Tom said so in the movie. That is one of the reasons he is so mad.

reply

I stand corrected.

reply

Who ever the woman was who seduced Tom, she was a freak. One of the most sexually aggressive women I've seen in a 1930s movie.

She knows what she likes, gangsters, and she goes for it. Whether they are sober and into it or not.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

I've just seen a DVD of 'The Public Enemy' which shows the movie in full as it was in 1931 and that scene is much clearer than it was in the TV version I saw previously (which was the 1934 re-release version after parts of certain scenes were edited out by the Hays Office which they considered unsuitable for public viewing).

That woman Jane was a predatory man-eater, she could devour 'boys' like Tom Powers for breakfast!!!!!

She is not a freak, there are quite a few like her around.

Beware, you have been warned!!!!!

reply

im just finally getting into pre-code movies..
that scene made my eyes bug nearly out of my head i was so shocked! shocked and giddy and delighted.. haha.. best movie ever.

reply

Yeah I too was blown away at just how sexual she was and what she was willing to do to sleep with Tom. I'm glad he slapped her though, but yes she was Paddy's girl and he was still with Jean Harlow's character so he was pissed she took advantage of him while he was drunk.

RIP Paul Newman 1925-2008. Words can't express how much you will be missed.

reply

When he slapped her, that was possibly the only time when Tom Powers had any sense of morality. For the most part, Tom is primarily worried about what is best for Tom.

reply

If this shocked you then you should see Baby Face starring Barbara Stanwyck which is pre code, and the movie probably most responsible for implementing the notorious Hayes Code, watching Stany do her thing will curl your toes! Baby Face is 10/10 star movie.

reply

aaaaahhhhhh!!! i thought so! i was stunned that such a frank discussion of off-screen sex was taking place in a movie from that era. i figured there was no censorship at that time, and u confirmed it. thanks!

reply

It surprised me too but I liked that scene, because any other time, in any movie today the guy would be laughing his ass off at having his friend's girl and he don't know anything about it, but not Tom Powers, he had enough sense to be mortified when he found out what happened. And I liked that when she was putting him to bed he told her to get away from him because she was Paddy's girl. That's why his bad guys were likeable.

reply

I was just watching this scene on Youtube and she says to Tom "You don't think I am too old?". When she filmed this, Mia Marvin was......27?

"Knowledge is cheap at any price"

reply

She was deliberately trying to get him drunk in several scenes before that.
