which version is best??

1933 or 2005? I love both, but I do think 1933 is the best, I feel the new one is too long

1976. Neither 1933 nor 2005 are good.

BuddyLove63 above nails several important points to support a position that the 1933 version is most formidable, followed in descending order by the 1976 and 2005 remakes. The 2005 version largely copies the 1976 story without adding anything significant and doesn't have its complexity of doomed romance between the girl and both Kong and the hero. I shed a few tears at the '76 ending but was only relieved when the '05 film ended. The Jackson action sequences were certainly exciting roller coaster rides, but the emotional effect didn't linger once the house lights came on.

For me it has to be the 1933 version hands down. Though I believe the 1976 version has a better storyline as to why they are going to the Island in the first place. The oil crisis and an undiscovered island that has the potential of unearthing much needed oil. Though the 1933 version comes a very close second. At least Denham explains how the map came into his hands unlike the 2005 version where Jack only says he has gotten hold of a map with no explanation as to who gave it to him and how they got it. Strangely enough in the deleted scenes of the 2005 version there is a better explanation of Jack relating the story of how he got the map.
I will credit the 2005 having the best finale of all of them, this I believe (yes I know the effects were superior overall compared to the other 2 versions) was one of the few things Jackson did better than the original. I still get vertigo when Kong jumps up at the plane smashing its wings off and have always felt that despite the original being brilliant and being very iconic to the film, the original ending was too short and not enough planes fighting him. I remember when I was younger seeing a promotional shot of Kong stood atop a different building from the ESB fighting about 12 aircraft wishing they had also shot that one and released it.

"I shed a few tears at the '76 ending "

Me too, but only because I was laughing so hard.

I don't know how anyone can possibly think the relationships between Ann/Jack and Ann/Kong were in any way better in the previous versions, but to each their own.

I love them both equally.

I vote 1933,

But I think that those who vote on original versions vs remakes should add their ages,

I think that has a lot to do with tastes,

I'm 65 yrs old as an FYI

I'm 36. I can't stand Kong '05 and think King '76 was only marginally better.

I absolutely consider Kong '33 to be one of the greatest films of all time.

Requiescat in pace, Krystle Papile. I'll always miss you.

I'm 25 and I love the 1933 one. The 1976 one is ok. I hate the 2005 one.

1933.

In my case, self-absorption is completely justified.

I saw this post and wondered: Are there really people who think that the 2005 debacle is better than the 1933 version? And then I remembered there are people who think The Dark Knight Rises is a good movie. So anything is possible, I guess.

Kong 1933 is one of the best movies ever made.

I feel bad for people who don't like black and white movies. There should be a foundation for them so they can get the help they need.

33. Not even debatable.

Yeah, 1933 easily. Merian C. Cooper had a real knack for spectacle, and the original is almost always the best (but that's not why - 1933 is best on merit alone).
