Is this considered to be a western?

Hi folks. So, to be brief - is this film viewed as a western? It is odd because it is never mentioned with the essential classic western films - even though the story is set in the west and has several western tropes. Thoughts?

reply

yes, it is

Sierra Madre is in Mexico, not a cowboy or Indian in sight.

I would not consider it a western.

This has been debated before. I think its more of a film noir than a western. There are several elements that exclude it from being a western. Namely, that its set in 1920s, Mexico. I don't think westerns necessarily have to be about cowboys and Indians either though.
