Modern Day Norma Desmonds?

I know Gloria Swanson owned the role, but it really is the role of a lifetime. What other actresses could you see playin a great Norma Desmond?

Meryl Streep
Laura Linney
Glenn Close
Angela Lansbury
Faye Dunaway
Helena Bonham Carter
Carol Burnett

I'd add Jessica Lange to that list,

All great choices...

Madonna reminds me of her...the character that is.

Lindsey Lohan. She wouldn't need make up. Just film after a binge.....

Wilder actually did cast Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond because she was a faded silent star from Hollywood's silent era. I don't think you could intentionally make another Sunset Boulevard today. And if you did, it would have to contain a lot of allusions and homages to real life.

Sunset Boulevard was littered with homages and nods to Hollywood's forgotten past.

Nicole Kidman!!!
I read in a French magazine two or three years ago that she was the frontrunner for the filming of the musical!!!
Nicole can sing and she actually looks frozen/mummified by now!!!
Natural choices like Streep or Glenn Close have become far too old for the part!!!

probably why she didn't get cast in 'larry crowne'.

I second Faye Dunaway.
And add Diana Ross.

And Norma Desmond's age has to be extended beyond 50. It always seemed to me it should have been older in the original. But for sure, in a remake.

Sorry, know it's 2 years later, but DIANA ROSS???? Are you freakin' SERIOUS?

reply

I think Miss Ross is an inspired choice.

Glen Close actually played Norma Desmond in the stage production of Sunset Blvd. While its not nearly as good as the movie or anything I think it's cool that you mentioned her pretty quickly and she did technically have the role.

About 90% of female screen actors really.

Very rarely do they stay famous after 30.

It's a pretty brutal business. One minute you're a goddess, the next you're desperately hanging on in the hope that you'll get to come back in a support role as somebody's wise aunt or mother.

I like your updated story line. A forgotten actor premise is definitely plausible, and opens the field of choices.

Joanna Lumley. Liza Minelli.

Joan Collins for REAL! She's LIVING the part. Talk about Method Acting.

Only problem is she's a pretty terrible actor in general

Right away I thought of Cher.
