Leslie Caron = Not attractive

I think she aged beautifully, but in this movie, though she is an incredible dancer, I found her so utterly unattractive and unappealing! It really got in the way for me.

And does anyone else think Beth Broderick is the reincarnation of Nina Foch?!?!

The younger, defective natural look is more attractive than the older, plastic surgery look, IMO.

Leslie Caron is an actress who got better looking as she got older. (other examples -for me anyway-) Meryl Streep, Debbie Reynolds, Sophia Loren. Check her out in Father Goose and you'll see what I mean.

As a dancer, Leslie Caron was awesome in this movie, but I didn't for a moment think that she was attractive. Had a fresh look about her but that's about it. I was a tad surprised that Gene Kelly turned a blind eye towards the real beauty in the film. Nina Foch is so stunning, that she took the sheen away from Leslie Caron.

Can everybody say "gamine"?

Leslie was always pretty, but she did get prettier as she aged.

"I think she aged beautifully, but in this movie, though she is an incredible dancer, I found her so utterly unattractive and unappealing! It really got in the way for me." = Because you're most likely gay. She was very attractive...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I understand that you did not find her physically attractive, but to say that her physical appearance got in the way [of the story being told?], I find that to be utterly ridiculous. It honestly makes me think that you're quite shallow, which is a bad thing since I do not know you personally and you could be a lovely person.

There's a term in French for the kind of "unconventional" beauty embodied by the young Leslie Caron: "jolie-laide," essentially "ugly-beautiful. The term is used to describe women who are not conventionally beautiful, but striking nonetheless. Leslie Caron was very young in this movie (20), and was barely out of her gawky teenage years. She did get more conventionally attractive as she aged, but I always thought she was achingly beautiful in both this movie and "Gigi." She certainly got pretty enough to keep Warren Beatty interested for a number of years...

I just feel sorry for poor Nina Foch, because she was only 26 at the time of filming, (just 7 years older than Leslie Caron), but seems to be portraying a woman supposedly (??) in her 40's, and also supposedly MUCH older than Gene Kelly, when in actual fact she was 12 years YOUNGER than Gene Kelly!! Maybe Metro Goldwyn Mayer just dressed her and made her up to look a bit more frumpier than what she really was? I don't know?

(I did also read that Nina got the Chicken Pox during production and when she came back from sick leave she was covered in spots so had to be carefully made up each day, so maybe that is why she looks older than her 26 years??)

attractive inteligent looking some one you like to get to know the anti dote to all the gastly man fields and monroe blondes

I agree. With her short hair and goofy grin, she looked like she was playing a 14 year old. To have grown men chasing after her was a real stretch.

Lots of goofy comments here, but i APPREDCIATED the one about Nina Foch. I didn't know she was younger than Kelly and she was so underused at Metro.

I've loved Leslie Caron since the first time I saw AAIP, then in Lili and Glory
Alley, Gaby, and on and on to those mentioned. Yes, I agree, the Mona Lisa is as homely as mud fence, and the French messed up with Lady Liberty statue in our harbor, and yes, she did not have the mammaries of a mARILYN mONROE, or Jayne Mansfield, and Gene kELLY must have had bad eyesight, spotting her on a stage in Paris. Still, love is blind.

I also loved the comparison with Elizabeth in Ivanhoe -- that was stunning as well when I saw it on the big screen in the old days.

Wow. To you, and everyone commenting on this thread. First of all I absolutely adore Leslie Caron's films. She is gorgeous, has a fabulous figure, and is an enchanting dancer and actress. You do realize she is still alive, right? I hope she does not see this thread. It is cruel. She just turned 84 years old this month.
