episodes suitable to watch at summertime?

could you twilight zone residents here give some suggestions on episodes suitable to get into during the summer season, episodes with a summer story, theme or just fitting for that time of the year, one episode i would recommend to you myself is "the midnight sun", i listen to that on hot summer days on the twilight zone radio dramas, i also understand "one for the angels" takes place on a hot july day, perhaps episodes playing out in the heating desert such as "king nine will not return" or "i shot an arrow into the air", "the rip van winkle caper"?. help me out in case i forgot any, please. throw in all kinds of suggestions i'm not particular.

nerd girl,
glasses hangin on your nose,
leaving you to your own accord,
at the desk she took her glasses off,
fire in her eyes gave me scratch and bite marks,
from other side of the office floor scared me to death,
couldnt explain what she did as she put her glasses back on again.

You've got a pretty good list so far. I might add "The Lonely" to it myself.

thank you my fellow twilight zone residents for all the helpful suggestions, i've actually had use of every reply, i had missed much of them i see, i haven't gone through every episode mentioned here yet, but i would really advice everybody to check out "the midnight sun" during these hot summer days, either on tv or "the twilight zone radio dramas", the radio adaptation of "the midnight sun" actually has a couple of roles included that were suppose to be on the tv episode in the 1959 series but cut because of budget. i wonder if the end of "the midnight sun" is kind of a "a stop at willoughby" case, where many viewers seem to think the episode would have worked just as good without that last twist at the end, as in the midnight sun, where she is, on the contrary to the rest of the episode, in freezing cold, just as garth is laying in the snow, but where i figure he's gone on spiritually into willoughby anyway but his actual body had to end up somewhere, well one thing is for sure, the great closing narration wouldn't have worked as proper would it without the last twist in midnight sun (assuming the tv narration is the same as on radio). have a great continued summer everybody, hopefully cooler than "the midnight sun" scenario.😲

out of fuel,
messy windshield without you,
motor echo like a mountain jack,
headlight lit as you came back,
and the barrier broke through,
clear window along with fuel.

1) The opening narration for "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" begins with:
"Maple Street, U.S.A. Late summer. A tree-lined little road of front porch gliders, barbecues, the laughter of children, and the bell of an ice-cream vendor."

2) In "A Stop At Willoughby," the conductor says, "July. Summer. It's 1888....Peaceful, restful, where a man can slow down to a walk and live his life full measure."

2)

Yes. & at last he stays.

"the last rites of jeff myrtlebank" i just realised to add to this list, and i agree with what's been discussed on this board earlier, i also find that episode rather dark, as the flowers he touches dies, and then there is the mentioning he might be a vampire, and somehow the fact that it takes place in the country in the 1920's adds to the atmosphere... you know what, perhaps this goes under halloween watching πŸ‘Ώ i'm referring here to the radio version of the episode on "the twilight zone radio dramas", much of that seemed more like mockery than comedy, so i think i might just like the tv version of this episode better, but i can't remember it. it really does remind of great anthony in "it's a good life", even the same setting, by the way, that episode is hilarious on the radio adaptation. - "where have you been, pal?... never mind don't tell me". - the bard, twilight zone.

theres a disconnect,
that you mend,
i cant get through,
like i do to you,
somehow my homeland,
feels farther than your distance.

Bewitchin Pool. It's got a swimmin pool! Even tho the episode sucks.

1. A Hundred Yards Over The Rim
2. The 7th is Made Up of Phantoms

reply

Surprisingly it was written by Earl Hammer, Jr. who wrote some really good episodes and created The Waltons. The Hunt is one of my favorite episodes. The only other episode he wrote that I didn’t like is Black Leather Jackets which is probably the only episode I dislike more than the Bewitchin Pool.

Walking Distance! One of the all-time greats.

A classic.

Third From the Sun.
Rod Serling's opening narration....... "Quitting time at the plant. Time for supper now. Time for families. Time for a cool drink on a porch. Time for the quiet rustle of leaf-laden trees that screen out the moon, and underneath it all, behind the eyes of the men, hanging invisible over the summer night, is a horror without words. For this is the stillness before storm. This is the eve of the end."

That one and The Monsters Are Due On Maple St. always remind me of summer.

reply

this is all good stuff, i love the narration to that episode ("third from the sun"), possibly one of the greatest episode opening narrations, and i had that in mind as well if i didn't mix it up with "monsters are due on maple street" which happened to be your other summer vibe episode, i listened to both after the suggestion on the twilight zone radio dramas, i'm more common with the extended narration performed by stacy keach. i suppose i could add another episode to this list, "on thursday we leave for home", it may be on another planet (as "the lonely") but they sure got it hot there... and have to live in caves if i recall correctly, in case i'm off at any description it's because i'm most always referring to the radio versions instead of tv, that's not to say one is superior over the other, but radio is always more convenient to listen to, and often those adaptations run longer with added roles and dialogue, sometimes to help the story adapt and sometime cause the tv version had things cut cause of budget reason, for example, "the invaders" and "an occurrence at owl creek bridge" has added roles, on tv these episodes solely rely on pictures. many of the episodes mentioned here are in the same cd box of one of the earlier twilight zone radio dramas releases (the bigger cd boxes from around 2005 rather than the 2013 blackstone boxes).

haunting memory echo in house,

revealin your face connecting dots,

I wish I had remembered that there are radio programs of this a lot sooner! I just checked out a couple of episodes on YouTube. This is wonderful. This is why I love listening to audio books. It's so nice to be read to. The radio programs have that same effect on me. Thank you for "tuning" me in!

reply

you're in for a treat, i can't tell you how good it feels to help a twilight zone fan discover these radio drama adaptations, if you're like me and started off getting hooked on the mystery and dialogue of the tv episodes you will appreciate all the expansions on the radio dramas, i didn't know they were on youtube, i've collected them all on cd, i first discovered them as bonus material on the 2004 dvd definitive edition, i tell you i got so hooked on the tv episode "the incredible world of horace ford" that after seeing it air on tv (the only season to air in my country, a season disliked by many i've realised here) i bought the dvd box just to hear another version (radio), i don't know which episodes you've heard so far but let me give you some suggestions on which to start off with, such as "the passersby", "the lonely", "the trouble with templeton", "a short drink from a certain fountain" (with adam west from "family guy") and most any starring bruno kirby is great fun. but i just might like all episodes really.

Oh my! I feel so silly! I have had the Definitive Collection Box set of TZ DVDs for a number of years now. I even checked out some of the commentaries. a while back. Since we have gotten Netflix, and the show, minus the hour long episodes, I tend to watch on that. You just reminded me of the radio shows that are included in that set! I could have been listening all this time!
Thanks again! I'm loving this!

"The Midnight Sun" (Season 3, Episode 10)

reply

well twilight zone residents, it's that time of year again, and thanks again for all the suggestions on episodes suitable for the summer, that's so incredibly nice of you, "where water is way more important than gold", hehe, yeah, nicely put. if you're without air conditioning during the hot summer months that "midnight sun" is one twilight zone episode really suitable to experience, i have a tradition of checking that out on hot days at summer time, but i listen to the radio adaptation of it on "the twilight zone radio dramas", i find it's easier to get around listening to radio than staying glued on a screen for half an hour, by the way, the radio versions usually run longer and has got added roles and dialogue, "the midnight sun" contains roles deleted from the tv episode because of budget reasons, and i often prefer the radio versions than the tv versions, guess they've had about half a century to polish on those classic tv episodes, right, they've got known actors in the parts, narrated by stacy keach and has great sound effects, so you're not only being read to missmargochanning. i mean really, "the midnight sun" is so relatable now. have a great summer.

thought she was on vacation,
but guess i was mistaken,
as if it wasnt hot enough,
madeleine came home,
like no one filling out a dress,
hooked on her hair down to her legs,
gave me the summer spirit in hottest weather yet.
