Does anyone else feel that this movie can be watched and appreciated...

... on some or even many OTHER levels and layers than simply a "rape and revenge-themed" film, even if one does appreciate such films PRIMARILY on THAT level ALONE, it being, basically, a film that has something to appeal to viewers beyond the theme (think "I Spit on Your Grave" among others) and that, it being such a finely crafted and superbly acted masterpiece, the movie has something in it to appeal to just about anyone, and even people who are not too keen on such genre, can also appreciate and admire the film as well?

Basically, in a nutshell, does anyone love this film for reasons not related to it being a rape and revenge themed film where such "baddies get their comeuppance" (yes, it happens here too) but still...

I mean, it has that, but to me, it is just simply such a brilliant and amazing film that I can appreciate it for OTHER reasons as well, and even watch it and admire it the same way as I do many other Bergman films but with DIFFERENT themes and subject matter in them, regardless of results.

I mean, films like I Spit on Your Grave and the lot mostly get appreciated, if at all, for the PRIME reasons alone - seeing sumbags get what they deserve, even if, OK, its all in the eye of the beholder, some viewers MAY see details and nuances that appeal to them on other levels too, even though most of those films may not also have them.

But The Virgin Spring just seems to be a movie that has more if not MUCH more to it than that alone, positive as that may be in itself, and the stunning cinematography combined with great acting and a touching story told well just make it a classic that I can appreciate on other levels besides, and rightfully so, seeing scumbags get their comeuppance, vigilante style, for their terrible deeds in recognizeable as such situations, and understandeable too, and its just an amazing movie overall.

Anyone else feel that way so?

I do.

While I can appreciate Craven's take on the story, I think that there is such beauty in Bergman's film.

Yes, basically, it has something to it to appeal more than just to fans of the genre, and even if I am in no particular mood for such themed film, I can still watch this and find something more and new to it, that's talent.

Seriously, it's even better than "Die Hard" as an action film, given how I love that movie too for its primary reasons alone, but I feel that movie also works on other levels than a pure action movie, and this one, The Virgin Spring, works on that level too, its own genre level, but also on other levels as well.
