shareDisagree. Darrin was an honest man who wanted to make it on his own...his own way. I honestly can't say I would have had his will power though...but deep down...no matter what he had Samantha on his side and he could never fail.

I think gbennet is basically a decent person, but he/she takes these comments waaay too seriously and defends these shows as if he/she was a writer (he is maybe?). For instance, the OP makes a snarky comment that still has some truth to it: why didn't Darrin allow his wife to use witchcraft for good?
You could defend Darrin as gbennet does and that's fine, but a lot of reasonable people have asked the same question without being low IQ "trolls".
Sometimes Darrin didn't object to a little supernatural assist. In one episode he chastises her ALL THE WAY to a dinner with a client because she used a "speed up" spell to get ready.
Then they get a flat tire in the pouring rain and he hesitates getting out of the car. He keeps hinting that Sam could fix it. When she makes him fix it in "the mortal way". he gets angry with her for that!
There were a few times when he was okay with witchcraft. In the first season, "A is for Aardvark", he gets carried away with using witchcraft while he's laid up with a sprained ankle.
There's always inconsistencies in writing a long running sitcom, but overall, the premise of the show *required* him to be a dick when it came to Samantha's magic. I understand that even if it grates a bit.
As a man married to a wonderful woman, I would insist that she do what is natural for her, even if it's supernatural in nature - that's why it's always been a source of frustration for me to watch him exercise his will over her even though I generally like the series and still watch it.
When my wife and I watch together and the inevitable plot device pops up with Darrin not liking Samantha to use magic even if it's to make her homemaking chores easier, I turn to my wife and deadpan "if you're a witch with magic powers, feel free to use them". She'll then look at the pile of laundry and wiggle her nose. Nothing has ever happened. Bummer.
Overall, Darrin didn't want Samantha using magic. But in the case of some of her "speed up" spells to do housework, he'd gripe if he caught her in the act. But he didn't insist she undo the work.
In the episode when his mother called and was coming right over, Sam used a speed up spell and said with his mother "it wasn't a visit, it was an inspection." Darrin ran out of the house because he needed a shine on his shoes and a haircut.
Sometimes I think he just yelled to save face and not seem like a hypocrite. He established early on that he didn't want her using magic, so he had to be consistent and yell EVERY time.
Actually I respect Darrin more for wanting to support his wife and family on his own salary. He could have easily suggested that Sam could conjure up anything and everything they needed, e.g., a house, furniture, clothes, trips,etc.
