Is Joey a racist?

When Joey first tells her mother that she has fallen in love, she begins by saying that his name is John Wade Prentice and "isn't that a beautiful name." What is so beautiful about a Waspy name? Why wouldn't a Hispanic, Jewish or other "ethnic" name be just as beautiful? Or better, what is "beautiful" about any name? Why would anyone other than a racist find a Waspy name "beautiful"?

What a fuss about such an innocent comment !
Prentice IS a beautiful name. I'm sure that if he had been white, she would have said exactly the same !

To answer your question, no, Joey is not a racist (at least not towards Black people).

You are pulling at straws or trolling with this question.

I have to agree. I hate calling people trolls but when someone isn't even willing to accept that others may have differing opinions over such an innocent line in a movie, I'd say that this is a troll.

My Webster's New World Dictionary defines "troll" as a noun meaning "any of a race of supernatural beings, variously conceived of as giants or dwarfs, living underground or in caves." I am mortal and am neither a giant nor a dwarf, and I live on the surface in a single family residence. Therefore I am not a "troll." Joey is not a real person; she is the creation of one or more script writers. She is depicted as having fallen in love with a Black man, which is not something a racist would do. However, a scriptwriter put into her mouth a line which is not compatible with a non-racist, i.e., a line which finds waspy names "lovely." I accept that some may disagree with me, but I think they are wrong and I am right, which is precisely what their attitude is toward me.

n.

3.a. A person who posts inflammatory or otherwise unwanted material on an electronic forum, especially anonymously.
b. The material so posted.

As usual, you only see what you want to see, regardless of any other obvious facet.

His name is Robert Paulson. Isn't it the most loveliest name, mommy!

Ummm if you think her finding his name beautiful is racist then you must be the bigot...or an idiot...

My goodness you've gotta be kidding me with this garbage! I never in all my life would think she was being a racist by finding a man's name (that she just "fell in love with") beautiful. You could obviously tell she had that "head in the clouds" attitude since they had just started a whirlwind romance and she probably found everything about him interesting and attractive and romantic.

Why am I even wasting my time here? If you get racist out of the character of Joey then you've got problems...I can only hope you have changed since you wrote this post almost 2 years ago.

I find this question utterly ludicrous and racist within itself. I cannot fathom how someone in this day and age could even still use a term "waspy" unless they, themselves are racist. Have you nothing more to care about than a name? And the responses here suggesting that "white" people love themselves more because they used a name they consider to be "white"? Utter ignorance. Are "Smith" and "Jones" racist names? Are you insinuating that black parents who name their children Robert or Mary racists against their own children? I know a lot of black people and their names all "sound waspy" to use your words. Were their parents racist as well? Granted, a Hollywood screen writer chose "John Wade Prentiss". But what about 99% of the black population in the United States that bear "waspy" names? Is it not racist to think that they should have more "ethnic" names? What about everyone being created equal?

Utterly racist and ludicrous. Change your way of thinking. You're thinking like a racist.

reply

One of those who actively looks for racism in every interaction between races, are ya? She was setting her up. She knew what the situation was and she probably knew exactly how her parents were going to react. Just like how she "sounded black" when she invited John's parents to dinner. She was forcing everybody's hand. You, irv, need to lighten up.

The entire society found a "waspy" name like John Wade Prentice beautiful back then. (in fact it might be the case still today) It wasn't seen as racist to find a name like that beautiful (something like that is still debated today). Joey wasn't any more racist than a man today in love with his girlfriend saying if his she isn't beautiful referring to her blonde hair and blue eyes.

And btw. African Americans took names from slave owners, and most of them have "Anglo" or waspy names. It wasn't until the 1970s and the black power movements that "Afro" and Muslim names became substantial percentage of their demographics.
