Just watched the episode (again) when Mary dated the handsome ski instructor, Paul van Dillen.

Phyllis was absolutely hilarious in this one. She looked like she would've jumped Paul's bones in a second. She had a very funny Freudian slip when she said that the four of them should double date, "Me and Paul and you and Lars".

It's normal for a longtime married woman to envy her single friend's good looking suitor. But Phyllis did it in such a funny way.

Are you sure that was a slip? Seems like even when Phyllis says something superficially complimentary about Lars, there's a criticism tucked away in it somewhere.

Oh yes, her criticisms of Lars are intended. She means what she says. One of funniest comments about him was a time when she and Mary talked about loneliness.

Phyllis said, "You don't know what loneliness is until you've gotten into bed with Lars." LOL

I think her double date suggestion was a bit of a slip. She did have the hots for Paul and wanted to spend an evening in his company. She accidentally paired them up the way she was thinking, i.e., "me and Paul". Her jabs at Lars are intended, but I don't think she intended to admit aloud that she wanted Paul as HER date.

She sure was! She could wring laughs out of the most seemingly bland comments.

In that same episode she tells Mary about Lars Uncle Gustav who was visiting. She had a room full of relatives all speaking Swedish. She was sure that they were criticizing her because someone would look at her and say, "Gott hilfen Lars."
