No. I think they just held hands in the desert sequence because they were feeling "gay" but in the old sense of the word as in happy and carefree. (har har)

reply

They are. In the book Felix Leiter refers to them as known homos.

Normally I'd call OP a nitwit. Because someone seems to ask if every single male character in every single movie ever made is gay at some point on IMDb's message boards. But, here is one of the rare exceptions. Because there was a scene where the one says, "For a girl." And the other looks upset. This is obviously hinting at the fact that they're gay. Yes, they're gay. If you don't notice that one subtle clue you'd never know.

reply

Yes, that one and only "subtle" clue revealed all. Blink and you missed it.

When I saw this in the theater it never crossed my mind that they were gay, I just thought they were quirky killers used for comedy relief. But then I was surprised when I heard George Michael was gay. Now Boy George?????? I nailed that one.

Also some of the stereotypes. One of them puts on perfume in an effeminate manner at one point.

If you didn't catch the way they were affectionately touching each other and holding hands then I'd understand how you missed that they were obviously gay.

Politically incorrect Bond villains. Loved it.

reply

They were as queer as a big pink parade. The two killers in the novel are gay as well, but not anything like Wint & Kidd.

Yes there are about a dozen give aways - holding hands, cologne, "for a girl" on the plane, etc. The most revealing was when Bond tied the bond to the guys coat tail which had been pulled between his legs. The dude ohhhhhed and ahhhhhed when his taint was compressed. I guess those kind of people like this.

That's a good story! I can just heard Connery saying that!

I saw an interview with Bruce Glover and Putter Smith. Bruce talked about having Mr. Wint act all possessive of Mr. Kidd, like in a "he's MY toy!"way. Putter, who was a professional musician, not an actor, said he just acted like himself. In other words, Mr. Kidd was a killer who just happened to be gay, but you wouldn't know it from just hanging around him. This worked fine onscreen, as having two "mincing" characters would get tiresome. You needed the "opposites attract" thing going on.

Also amusing (in addition to Wint's compressed taint) is how easy they were to kill. After being quite possibly the most evil and sadistic villains in all of Bond, they are snuffed out in seconds. All that flamboyance but put them face-to-face with an opponent and they explode like fairy dust.
