worst line: 'I like rape'

I'm talking about the scene where all the outlaw baddies (and bikers and klansmen) are lining up to get a job on Hedley's gang, and one of them is asked by him to explain why he wrote "rape" twice on his resume, and the outlaw smiles and says "I like rape."

Of all the edits BS has undergone over the years, this line is the one I first noticed to go. In 1986 I watched this for my millionth time on video with my white flatmates in New Zealand (I'm a Yank), and the whole movie was met with a studied silence. When the "I like rape" line was delivered, my female flatmate turned to me and said "That's a joke?"

And as much as I hate to see movies get sliced to ribbons, that line always did make me wince. Call it politcal correctness or whatever, but I don't miss it. Fortunately the rest of the movie is hilarious. Side note: I ushered during this movie in the early '80s. We were showing Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories," and apparently it wasn't a big enough draw, so they added "Blazing Saddles" and made it a double feature--kinda like pairing wine with grits!

I'm a woman, and the "I like rape" line doesn't bother me at all. First, it's a comedy. Second, he's a bad guy. Third, rapists don't commit rape because they don't like it, they do it because they do!

I don't defend rape in any way, and rapists should be castrated with a rusty knife. But it's a joke!

People just need to lighten up.

I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.

Well said. I agree very much with this,

rapists should be castrated with a rusty knife
- when it proven, without a doubt, that it is rape. As in, the victim and the rapist didn't know each other and she never made any action which might be seen as interest in him vs. the "victim" and the "rapist" got drunk at a party together and the next morning she wakes up in bed and remembers she's got a boyfriend.

On a tangent - I do think it is interesting that non-violent rape is one of the most common fantasies that a woman has. THAT DOES NOT MEAN SHE ACTUALLY WANTS TO BE RAPED - I just find it interesting.

I hope this is a joke too.

Why?

reply

Because rapists shouldn't be castrated. This isn't Hammurabi's Babylon.

Why shouldn't they? It would make sure that they don't do it again, and would make a lot of people think twice before they do it.

To be clear, I'm not talking about the "he-said-she-said" BS. I'm talking about the victim not knowing the rapist, being beaten, etc.

Without a doubt, one of the failings of our society is the actual harsh and swift punishment of crimes. And sex crimes are ones which don't usually allow for rehabilitation.

reply

It would make sure that they don't do it again

Just like chopping off thieves' hands ensured that they never stole again, but it also ensured that they could never write, carry items, or masturbate, caress a loved one. The punishment exceeded the crime and affected areas in their life that had nothing to do with the crime itself. Rape is not such a severe and untreatable crime that it should carry such a lifelong punishment, and it doesn't only pertain to libido so cutting off one's form of sexual expression is both overkill in addition to missing the point altogether.

And sex crimes are ones which don't usually allow for rehabilitation.

Sorry, but that's the lazy way out.

If you rape someone, you don't deserve to masturbate or caress a loved one.

And, knowing what rape often does to people, you can't say that the punishment would outweigh the crime.

Rape is not such a severe and untreatable crime

That is simply your opinion, and knowing how many people are never able to let their guard down again and be intimate with someone and/or commit suicide, it is an idiotic and immature opinion.

Sorry, but that's the lazy way out.

You are entitled to your wrong opinion, but it doesn't mean my facts are wrong. Most sex offenders don't offend just once. Most sex offenders don't serve their time and then live a quiet life with zero sexual desire unless they are chemically castrated. Of course, that doesn't mean they won't stop taking the chemicals, so that allows them to offend again.

We have 7 billion people in the world. We don't need to be keeping sex offenders.

Blazing Saddles use of the N word, the "joke" you mentioned and slurs on gays and gay jokes and the Indian "jokes" wouldn't be tolerated today as it would get so much heat from various organizations it would make your head spin.

Sounds like you need to grow a pair.

The line is funny precisely BECAUSE you have a thug who is treating the barbaric act of rape with all the casualness of sliding into a hot tub.

Also hilarious is Harvey Korman's response to the guy. (Something like, "Ooooh, he'll do.)

What's more, removing these lines from the movie would be an act of ARTISTIC rape.

I would have (respectfully) said to your NZ friend that in my humble opinion -- and she could certainly have felt free to disagree with this -- but I would have said that culturally, Political Correctness represents a massive step in the wrong direction.

It was hilarious, duude. I always joke about rape with my frat bros. Don't be a PC pussy.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

To quote George Carlin: "People say 'You can't joke about rape, rape's not funny. I say, *beep* you, I think it's hilarious, how do ya like that?"

I have a female friend who was able to find a japanese movie called Yaru (translated: Raping) hilarious, which is a 70 minute serious film about a woman being raped or attempting to be raped by every person she meets.

To be fair it is pretty funny.
