They don't know how he did it, they don't care that he did it. They're just glad someone got the job done.

I think the real question would be did anyone even bother to ask Luke why he turned off his targeting computer?

reply

This is a good point.

"Luke you've turned off your targeting computer. What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

*silence*

OK, cool I guess.

reply

Yeah they were probably scrambling for their escape pods back home.

“Stupid bastard turned off his targeting computer! Run for your lives!”

reply

LOL

reply

He just blew up the most destructive weapon in the history of that galaxy. Anyone who would have thought about giving him shit would have gotten their arm pulled off by the wookie.

I never got the sense the rebels were a military unit, so it wasn't like they cared about demotions or throwing an insubordinate in the brig.

I mean, they made Han Solo a Captain by Empire and a General in Return of the Jedi.

A kid princess was leading the evacuation of Hoth.

Lando might be the most shocking - he was a general too, but from what I could tell didn't even really participate in the rebel alliance. After Empire he was looking for Han. He comes back with Han in Return of the Jedi and suddenly is leading the attack on the second Death Star.

That purple haired lady did decades later when that Po guy was being a hotheaded dick.

reply

Right, he stages a mutiny! So he's stunned and relieved of his duties, and ten minutes later he's leading the fight on the salt planet. Apparently their brig is just a time-out corner.

In a real military unit he would have been hanged.

What I love is we later find out the “holdo maneuver” has a 1 in a million chance of working which means vice admiral gender studies tried to run away and she failed at running away and yet she has the nerve to fuss at point for “betting the survival of the resistance on bad odds”. I hate that woman so much

reply

Is that the hand waving used to explain away the idiocy of flying at light speed through an enemy ship? The "holdo maneuver?" It has a 1 in million chance?

I hated that plot device so much when I watched the movie. I was like "that's all they have to do? Just make some ships that are just empty hulls filled with explosives and a hyperdrive system that can pilot itself into the enemies' ships. We can call them.... guided missiles." sheesh.

Also, didn't they fly the Millenium Falcon through the starbase killer's shields at hyperdrive? Was that also 1 in a million?

reply

Jar Jar Binks was also a General. Military ranks in the Star Wars universe don’t seem to mean much.

reply

This movie is a work of fiction and no scenes were ever filmed of Luke getting reprimanded for turning off his computer in his X Wing fighter

reply

wernt you over on the die hard page earlier with an identical buzkill comment?

reply

although you wrote that last week , so ,er , think 4th dimensionally

reply

Yes, I had to correct a poster on the Die Hard board. I believe he thought the movie was a true story

reply

Actually this isn't fiction. It's based on a true story. Fact.

reply

Can you show any proof of it being a true story

reply

Of course

reply

I just asked my college professor, who knows everything, and he told me that Die Hard is all fiction. On top of that, it glorifies white privilege and too much violence. He told me I shouldn't be watching these kinds of movies

reply

Your professor is an idiot.

reply

This person was also on Cobra Kai arguing that it should be “Daniel with a D” and not “Daniel with an L”.

I haven’t run into many people on these boards more wrong about movies.

A few weeks later at Top Turbolazer the civilian instructor used Luke’s choice to go commando as an example of what not to do.

At which point one of the other pilots nicknamed “Moseisley” leaned in and whispered to Luke: “gutsiest move I ever saw”.

reply

But the civilian instructor *actually* thought is was genius, but she couldn't say so, because she'd fallen for him and she was scared everyone in the room would see right through her.

reply

He just destroyed the Death Star. Nobody cares about protocol after that. And whilst it’s not widely discussed, the force is a real thing in that universe. There’s more to things than just blind luck.
That might be the nerdiest thing I’ve ever written 😂

reply

It is funny how we start talking like these things are legit. I'd also like to add, in my own opinion, this is supposed to be a rag tag team made out of desperation. In a normal sophisticated military setting, maybe they would refuse Luke's help to fly so soon after him arriving. but they were literally 30 minutes from destruction and they needed all the help they could get. Not saying people can do ANYTHING they want but I feel there is also a sense of 'do what you gotta do' considering the circumstances.
