THIS was the movie I had heard such great things about??

Christ, I gave up after half an hour. This movie was a colossal bore. Horrible, listless acting, wretched dialogue, weak plot.... If the first 12 minutes are the most terrifying, I could not imagine the crap I had coming in the rest of the film. It was not interesting, terrifying, mysterious or engaging in the least. Keep in mind, I love good, old-school horror & appreciate a slow-burn type of movie like House of the Devil (THAT is a masterpiece), but this movie seemed like half-assed student film that did not deserve my viewing.

Sadly, I agree.

I was excited to finally sit down and watch this supposed "Masterpiece of Horror" and all I got was terrible acting, even more terrible dialogue, and just an average so-bad-it's-good "cult" film. The Beyond was so much better. There was nothing genius about it except the set design. The rest was just terrifyingly boring.

It was one of the most annoying (horror) films I've ever watched which just made me scoff and chuckle at its fantastical absurdity.

And don't get me started on the music. Oh, my God. I had to lower the volume to just a percent just so I could salvage what was left of my hearing after I accidentally had the movie to full volume when that opening sequence of hell came up.

Also, it's sad to see people be so defensive about their favorite film; it won't change anybody's mind. Everyone has their own opinion and they can like or dislike whatever they want. No need to judge. 😊

Not to mention, this was more of an experience than a film, like Eraserhead and Gozu. You "feel", but it's not for everybody. This really does make me sad. I loved the colors, though, lol.

It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.

I thought "The Beyond" was amateur all around. "Suspiria" had excellent set design, cinematography, score (I disagree with your opinion of it) and direction. The performances weren't "terrible" at all (they were in "The Beyond"). Visually, "Suspiria" IS a masterpiece.

Isn't that your fault and not the movies?

Can't stop the signal.

It's "movie's", you hypocritical asshat.

Yes...this was the movie you had heard such great things about.

I love Suspiria but it is an acquired taste: I lent my copy on DVD to a friend and he didn't like it much either.

reply

Never heard of House of the Devil. What is it?

reply

Nobody has explained the deer queef scene, to this day.

I don't care what the critics and people here too. This was not a good movie.
Acting 3/10
Directing 4/10
story 7/10
editing 2/10
I don't understand what the "big deal" with some movies is. I guess someone told them it is a good movie and because "The citics" loved it, people agree it is a good movie even though it is not. I rated it 4/10

That's because the critics can write complete sentences.

Yes, I saw Suspiria on many greatest horror lists. I bought the dvd and loved it. Those critics told the truth.

It was a visual nightmare. A great movie. I rated it 8/10.

Can't stop the signal.

Cinematography/visuals 10/10...

I agree it's not one of the best horror films with gripping story but it's quite powerful and creative visually.

Also the atmosphere builds up towards the end, making it all in all a decent film and must see for people interested in pure cinema.

One post doesn't make someone a regular. So what if he doesn't like the movie. No movie is perfect. Suspiria certainly isn't.

Honestly, I'd love to know what some of you people think good, if not great movies are.

You see this all the time. Someone bashing a great movie like Suspiria, or even the Director, Argento. Then the same person goes into the Transformer forums posting about how awesome the action was and how great the acting is. Well of course those things are good, they are considered modern day. Its what we are used to. You cant watch an old movie and bash it for acting or action or effects. You think in 20 years Transformers is going to look up to date? You think the acting is going to be the same?

Pro tip; It wont

Not everyone watches movies for the same reason. In fact, most people watch movies for the wrong reasons.

Suspiria may be guilty of a thing or two, but saying it seems like a half-assed student film is absolutely ridiculous. Even people and critics who don't care for it overall still acknowledge its groundbreaking use of color, its ability to emulate a nightmare-state, its superior cinematography, and even its highly effective soundtrack.

I'd love to know of any student film that can get even in the neighborhood of what Suspiria does. Geez, just read the critical reviews of it, see how many "greatest films" lists it lands on, over and over again.

...half-assed student film, my ass. It's one thing to not like something, but that's just ill-informed, to say the least.

reply

Because some people, in their effort to sound clever, say things which are devoid of any sense whatsoever.

No, this film is by no means "perfect." But it is a film that is discussed in film school for how instructive it is (camera work, lighting, use of color on mood, etc.). We spent a day on this and Profondo Rosso.

Half-assed student film, my ass...indeed.

This post is hilarious.
