I watched this thinking it was "Road Warrior" and could not make it through

This reminded me a lot of the Duel and early film by Speilberg. Early shoe-string budget and a lot of fun.

( have to admit, I thought I wanted to watch Road Warrior and was really confused what I as watching. This movie was rough and unpolished.

Road Warrior is a massive step up from Mad Max in terms of budget, story and world building.

Mad Max is a slightly above average revenge thriller at best. It does have some decent chases and stunts though, back in the days when such stuff was done for real.

It also came out at a time when Australian cinema was going through a resurgence, so people were keen to watch Australian movies.

However, some of the posters and artwork for Mad Max give a very inaccurate idea of what the movie is about.

That said, do watch The Road Warrior, it's a classic.

I used to prefer Road Warrior to Mad Max but over the years, MM has grown on me and now I slightly prefer the original.

RW has more action (although the car chase with Nightrider equals anything in it), and Gibson is more iconic in it, but overall, the original has the better characters, and a bit of a Horror vibe about it that I prefer.

Same here. Road Warrior's junkyard-tribal aesthetics have become a staple of post-apocalyptic fiction for damn good reason, but I've come to like just as much, if not actually more, this film's apocalyptic ambience, where people are still trying to carry on as usual with their lives as the world is slowly but surely coming apart at the seams around them.

The Nightrider speech alone is as good as anything in MM2.

I prefer The Road Warrior but Mad Max is still a great movie.
