Was 'Monroe Ficus' ever confirmed to be gay?

I was recently having a discussion about the 1981-83 sitcom _Love, Sidney_ -- in which Tony Randall's character (the Sidney of the title) is definitely gay, although his sexual orientation is very seldom discussed or used as a plot point in episodes. However, the series didn't play "is he or isn't he?" guessing games with the TV audience about Sidney's homosexuality, and it is clearly mentioned that he had once been in a long-term relationship with another man.

So since _TCfC_ came from the same era, I started wondering whether any of the characters ever made a direct statement about Monroe Ficus being gay, or if viewers just had to make this inference based on the fact that the character was a super-swishy young man from San Francisco!

(My family lived overseas in the first half of the '80s, so I never saw more than a few episodes of each show on VHS tapes that people would send us from the States. Nonetheless, I distinctly remember seeing an episode of _Love, Sidney_ in which Sidney and his straight female roommate are trying to figure out how to tactfully break the news to a clueless third character that Sidney is "you know, THAT way" -- I was maybe 10 at the time, but it was still perfectly clear to me what "you know, THAT way" meant! But I can't remember ever seeing an episode of _Too Close for Comfort_ in which the other characters in the cast actually took notice of Monroe's flamingly stereotypical gayosity.)

I don't think so because at one point he really went after Sarah and I think one episode he may have tried to go after Jackie too.

So, just because he hit on Sara, he cannot be gay? Everyone I know says I'm gay as h*ll, yet when I look at IMBD's pictures of Lydia Cornell...all I can say is... gadamn! I'd tap that in a second! Fluidity!

I follow Lydia on Twitter...She's Still Hot!!!!!

I watched the show as a youngster and even then I thought he was gay. It wasn't until watching the repeats now as an adult and I see Monroe (at one time) tried to pursue one of the daughters. To me his character was goofy but also had a femininity about him that made me question his sexuality. While I don't think it was intentional - it definitely wasn't easy to overlook.

Um. Are you kidding? He minced around that set like a Liberace impersonator.

Because I typed "um"? Also it's "your" not "you're" genius. Man, I am 1000x smarter than you.

Why are you bringing up parents? Are you a kid? Because adults don't say stuff like that. So I assume you're a child with a crap attitude. Someday someone will beat it out of you if you keep it up.

Ok, I hate to argue the point.. I am not opposed to homosexuality, and maybe its because I'm watching a rerun.. If he wasn't suppose to be gay, then he's a terrible actor...

Although it wasn't apparent to me at the time, I was 8. But for you to be irate about it...

And as for a gay man playing it straight, yes.. think Rock Hudson. Also, noone would think Erkel was gay.

'Monroe' was as queer as a $3 bill.*
You'd have to be both blind AND deaf not to have picked up on it, the way he pranced around the sets. I don't know what these people are smoking to think otherwise.

gay in real life but played straight on too close for comfort

There was an episode early on where Monroe went to a therapist and he said the therapist thought he was gay.

Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!

Only saw one episode of this show so far, but it was the one where Sarah poses for Fleshpot magazine and Monroe could NOT stop looking at her nude photo. When he discovered that Sarah's head might have been superimposed on someone else's body, he wanted to find that woman.

The character may have been written as straight but Bullock is about as believable playing a straight man as Paul Lynde was. Which is to say, not at all. George Maharis pulled it off well in Route 66. Here, not so much.
