my favorite scene

My favorite scene is when Wilder and Pryor are first taken to jail, and that very large man with the cowboy hat on asks for a light, and Pryor starts to cry. Then he really gets scared when the only place he can light the match is on the guy's bare chest. Too funny!!!

I completely agree!!! What a legendary scene! I have to admit, I do love the part when Wilder slaps that big guy on the head... absolutely classic. I only have to think about it and I can't stop laughing :) I also love the part you are referring to when Pryor is terrified... the look on Wilders face is hilarious!! You can tell he is trying his hardest not to laugh.

One of my many favourite scenes is just before the slapping of the black guys head and the lighting of the match when they are trying to make out that they are tough by saying "We don't take no *beep* We don't take no *beep* in a really macho voice.

Another great scene is at the start when Richard Pryor is explaining to the two cooks that what they have added to the cooking is not Reaganol. "This is weed. This has been soaked in earth back home, in the motherland."

Why don't they make movies like this anymore?

reply

Those scenes when they first arrive in prison are great, but for me it is the court scene right after the judge hands down the sentence. When Wilder starts chanting "whoaoao"...Classic... I also just about cried the first time I saw the cab driver have the vice grip in the bar.

reply

With out a doubt that scene and the scene when the start getting "bad". holy crap that was funny. Then when Richard lights the match on dudes chest, (lmfao) that was one of the funniest movie moments.....ever, Pryors expression was timeless, he literally looked like he was going to *beep* his pants

ONE of my favorite scenes is when Grossberger (played VERY well by "Erland Van Lidth de Jeude) removes the stereotype that he doesn't have any intelligence by singing a lullaby, after Skip finished his song.

Does anyone know what the final word is Harry says when he orders his food in this scene? (just before they slop the food on his plate?)

From memory I think he says

"I'll have spare ribs, French fries, a big ole juicy chessburger on the side, with chocolate .......". Does he say "malt" or "mousse" or somthing similar??

Just curious!

Another classic line from this part of the film:

Skip: "Aren't you amazed at the quality of these vegetables - in a prison"
Harry: "I'm amazed at what's crawling around in my soup!"

reply

when harry meets the dude in the prison hospital and he says that the oriental doctor cut his nuts off... prior says "SAY WHAT!!??" his facial expression is so funny. and when skip and harry both put on the same pair of jeans and harry grabs skips leg and he says "AHHH I CAN'T FEEL NOTHING IN MY LEG".

"Man i don't *beep* believe you".

"Jesus you cooked half my stash!!"

"I'll wash your socks"

It's a chocolate malt he asks for. Its some weird concoction of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, milk and malt powder. Sounds kinda nice actually.

I'd have to agree with most that the best scene is where Pryor and Wilder act like badasses then try to light the the guy's smoke. Check out the big black guy's lip quivering as he tries to not to p*ss himself laughing.

Does anyone know who sang Grossberger's version of 'Down in the Valley'? Or was it actually Grossberger himself?

reply

Cheers for the chocolate malt info - it's been bugging me for years.

All of the Grossberger song info has been discussed here - soundtrack details are towards the end of the thread.

Jonny Cash does a good version of it.

The whole mechanical bull scene is hilarious.

"Where's the part where I go, 'YEE-HA!'?"

"Look, Ma, I'm dancin'."

Then of course the Warden having the vision of Skip riding the bull with the sunglasses on.

Malt.

Anyone know where to get a copy of that song? I think its an old Leadbelly song "Birmingham Jail", but I'd rather get a copy with Grossberger's falsetto.
DUH!! The title of the son is "Down in the Valley"

reply

That is also my fav scene

Too many!!!!! For me then, it has to be when Skip and harry are woken up early in Prison and Harry puts his leg in Skip's trouser leg - goes to feel it and grabs Harry's to then freak out as if he can't feel his leg!!!! Too funny plus right at te end of this, Gene just can't keep it together and starts to laugh at Pryor in the only way you would. Acting next to Pryor must of been a nightmare to keep it straight with Pryors whole body rattling with funny bones but Gene Wilder was the perfect partner, crazy honky!!!!

"Why'd you murder your step-daddy anyhow?"

"criticizing my new fur coat..........and slapping my hand"

Classic.

'Harry-guess who's here..'

Turns the corner and sees Harry in the cell with Grossberger, crying.
He mouths, 'Help..me..'

The only scene that is anywhere near as funny as the 'gettin' bad' scene has to be this one. Alright, maybe the 'oh-shee!' scene as well..

reply

My favorite scene is after they wake up in the cell on the floor. Gene wilder has his leg in a pair of pants. RP tries to put them on, and grabs GW's leg.
AAAAGH! I cant feel nothin in my leg!" LMAO Classic!

reply

one of my favorites is when they first get to prison and are taken that written test and when the guard keeps throwing Gene Wilder back in his and then Gene Wilder says "2 pears, 3 apples, (gets up and looks at the guard and starts saying things to the guard).

also the part where Gene Wilder's character tries talking to Grossburger the first time when their eating and Grossburger scares him away.

and the scenes where the prison guards punish Gene Wilder.

My favourite scene hasn't been mentionted yet!

Wilder & Pryor are just out of New York when their car breaks down, they end up in a bar and Gene starts studying these two mean-looking SOB's using a punching bag and starts getting inspired...he wants to go over and talk to them "to capture their rhythm". Which scares the hell out of RP! GW goes over anyway and starts talking sweetly and trying to get some polite chit-chat. Their reaction? Using the punchbag more aggresivly! GW's reaction to that? He asks for a go!

Then one of them punches the punchbag right off the wood it's tied to and sends it crashing through a couple of pool-lights and over to the other side of the room!

Genius.

Any scene in this movie makes me laugh, they could be talking about anything and i could laugh. these two actors together is one of the funniest comedy duos ive ever seen. When Gene Wilder keeps telling the gaurd that hes had enough hitting and he gets angry. Also when hes writing the test and he says. "A kid tried this on me at camp Minekoni in Vermont. And I hit him so hard that his braces ripped the whole upper part of his lip, his mother had to come get him in the middle of the season."

or when gene wilder starts riding the bull in the wardens office he looks so happy i laugh really hard at that.

For people who like this movie they should really watch Superman 3, Although Wilder isnt in it Pryor is so funny its ridiculous

"True friends stab you in the front"

The funniest parts of the movie was when they was first sent to jail and the walked in

"That's Right We Bad,and we don't take no *beep*

And when Wilder hit that Bald headed man from Rocky on the head!

And when they had to dance at the bank like chickens.

That was so Funny,I couldn't stop laughing!!!!

reply

My favourite part is definately the part where Skip is on the machanical bull. I watched it yesterday and I started crying because I was laughing so hard!

I also like the parts where the guard is trying to punish Skip in solitary confinement, and then Skip comes out and asks for one more day.

Ah, there are some great memories in this thread, guys. So many of them bring a smile to my face. I first saw the movie as a kid, and loved it so much my brother and I watched it again and again on VHS. I saw it on TV today and smiled at all the old scenes, but the one thing that really made me laugh out loud - which I hadn't noticed so much before - was at the rodeo when Skip is talking to his rival Cesar Geronimo from the other prison....

Skip: I hear your warden is a sweet, decent man. Is that true?
Cesar: He's a pr*ck!
Skip: A pr*ck???!!! Boy, did I hear that wrong!!!

It's just the way Gene Wilder delivers it. All wide-eyed and innocent. Marvellous stuff. Great movie.
